Unidentified Flying Object
Help me identify this car. Is it a 908? If not, it will be duly deleted from my valuable hard drive space! -- Curt

looks like one of many cars from that period
It is a really cool pic though, dont delete just burn it onto a cd :) |
If not a Porsche, it's not worth even a 50 cent CD! ;)
The front looks 908-like. But the air scoop and single cockpit opening don't??? -- Curt |
A few things tell me its not a 908. The air scoop, the single mirror, the rear air dam, and the pitiful fabrication of the front section of the car... the glass work leaves alot to be desired..
Perhaps it is a one/of car? thta has faded into oblivion. It is a very cool pic, and worth the cd price |
That is a Ferrari 1969 312P. It ran in FIA Group 6 with the 907, 908 and even the 911R.

Thanks Paul. Deletion has been completed. -- Curt

(I guess if you found a....say, Lola T-70, on your hard drive, you'd delete that too?) ;) |
The book I looked it up in says " The Ferrai 312P was more powerful than the Porsche 908, but this advantage was nullified by the Porsche"s incredibly low weight." It has the hp listed as 420 and the weight as 1496 lbs. The 908 is listed as 380 hp and 1386 lbs. Low weight = horsepower.
Them Germans are smart. |
<i>"You're a tough customer, Curt.
(I guess if you found a....say, Lola T-70, on your hard drive, you'd delete that too?) "</i> You would be correct Dr. Doug. Now, I have been known to save a few oddball Chaparral images .... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...parral2j03.jpg |
Wait just a minute. Are they saying that 100 pounds is equal to roughly 40 horsepower. I was thinking about making my 2.4 liter car into a 2.8 higher compression motor. It looks like now I just need to dump some weight from the car and the driver. Damit I love German beer.
|
Curt? Porsche isn't the ONLY car manufacturer on the planet... I do believe there have been a few others. Correct me if I'm wrong.
|
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, Paul. ;) -- Curt

Also I won't put complete faith in the numbers they were giving out. The margin of error is probably 15%.
|
1496 lbs? It looks weightless to me.
Italian or not, it's still a cool picture. |
Acceleration is arguably one of the lesser important competitive characteristics of a performance car. Adding horsepower increases acceleration, a little, and nothing else. Reducing weight increases acceleration too, and braking and cornering.

I heard it was more like reducing 7 lbs added about 1 HP equivalent... With the 100/40 formula it's 2/5 lbs per horsepower? Hmmm....
That would mean my 2000lb 'S' being what? 2400 lbs from the factory gained 160 horsepower equivalent? Sounds a bit high... Now 1/7 would yield about 60 HP equivalent which I would believe... |
I had always heard that a 100 pound reduction was worth 1/10 second in the quarter mile. Using Chris' ratios, that would be about 14 horsepower increase = 1/10 second reduction. Seems about in the ballpark??? -- Curt
