Taking the 911 out of storage -- should I wait?

Normally I wait for a good rainstorm to wash all the salt off the roads before waking my vintage jalopies from their winter hibernation. But this year, here in Chicago, the weather is beautiful and the roads are dry, but no rain in the forecast. I'm obviously itching to get the 911 on the road.

So I'm curious: are you guys in the Midwest driving or still waiting?

NYNick 03-15-2015 07:49 AM

Here in the NE, there's still snow on the ground, and I'm guessing salt on the roads. There's no way I'm taking my babies out. Salt=rust. Porsches love rust.

The weather is great but you know how it is here give it a day and it will change
I'm going to wait a bit. Too much salt dust on the street

rwest 03-15-2015 08:23 AM

Nope, that salt is covering everything still, I'm waiting for a good rain and street sweep before I risk it.

nvr2mny 03-15-2015 08:46 AM

I'm in Kansas City. Weather is fantastic and the cars are out of hibernation and enjoying being used. I say drive it.

Oh Haha 03-15-2015 09:11 AM

Got the itch but holding off for another couple of weeks. Once we get some good rainstorms to wash the roads it will be better.

The SC is on jack stands for wheel painting so it's probably easier for me to keep it there for now. I have to change the oil, bleed the brakes, and a few other tasks anyway.

racngrn 03-15-2015 09:43 AM

More salt on the roads in Maine than there is pavement it seems. We are many weeks away, I fear. I would definitely wait until the rains wash the salt away. Just isn't worth the exposure. Go for a "garage ride, as we call 'em.

86 ssinit 03-15-2015 10:25 AM

Rained Friday and Saturday here. That good enough for me.[img]http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads24/image1426443735.jpg.

david482 03-15-2015 10:28 AM

I'm in KC as well and can't keep it in the garage.

cabmandone 03-15-2015 03:51 PM

I'm in NW Ohio and planning to drive my car tomorrow. Supposed to be 70 and we've had a few light rains.

LakeCleElum 03-15-2015 04:17 PM

I keep my 73.5 Targa on the other side of the Mountains at a rental house in the winter. Such a warm winter, I brought in back over the pass at night with the top off in Feb. this year.....

I say, if the road is dry, drive and enjoy.

bill's911 03-15-2015 05:51 PM

i'm jealous. Forecast for anour 12-15 inches of snow here tonight and tomorrow, so still a while for me. I am figuring end of April earliest :-(

mikesride 03-15-2015 05:54 PM

Started mine up today and rolled her out on the drive...to much melt water sand and salt out yet to hit the road.

Tim/oh 03-15-2015 06:12 PM

Spent 6 hrs yesterday cleaning, clay bar, buff, wax..... Got the itch real bad today but resisted. Salt not much of a concern since its rained and most of the snow has melted, Potholes are the big deterrent for me. Roads are horrible here.

Starless 03-16-2015 05:05 AM

I'm in north central Connecticut, plenty of snow all around. I'll be 61 this year. I take the 911 whenever I can. I'll rust away well before the car ever does. Just hose it down after the ride.

reachme 03-16-2015 06:31 AM

I saw a Ferrari out this weekend in Ct. I wouldn't have done that but I gotta say it was fun to see it. Some people look forward to seeing flowers bloom in the spring, for me it's cars.

For those who can't understand why we have to be so protective up here, let me paint the picture. It isn't just the salt, it's the sand they put down that gathers into piles after the melt and even the first rainstorm does not take it away. It makes every tight corner a possible 180 degree spin plus the worry about the truck in front of you throwing all that junk on your paint.

Then this year the potholes are turning every drive into autocross avoiding potholes like cones. The daily freeze-melt opens up 6 inch holes that fill with black water waiting for a suspension system to wander over.

Jealous of all of you who don't have to worry about this, or don't care.

mrm930 03-16-2015 06:41 AM

Took my RS out yesterday. Weather was beautiful. We did not get alot of snow, so the gravel is really light - just watch how I drive.

Also it is supposed to hit 86 today!!!!! WTF???

OsoMoore 03-16-2015 07:26 AM

I'm up in Milwaukee, and the car has now been on the road for about 5 days. The snow melt got them pretty clean, and the weather is too nice to say "no".

Now I need to fix the driver's door handle so I don't look like a dork reaching through to open it. But that requires 2 hours of nice weather, and if that happens, I'm driving!

megerian 03-16-2015 07:43 AM

Here in Minnesota, I have already had mine out for a week, and loving the unseasonably warm March weather.

Cevan 03-16-2015 08:54 AM

We still have 18+ inches on the ground here in Mass. I just bought mine last Friday and sadly it's just sitting in my garage waiting for mother nature to do her thing. I just can't bring myself to drive it on roads with melting snow.

Henry hill 03-16-2015 10:37 AM

Must be in Michigan! Lol

TheSt|G 03-16-2015 11:00 AM

Dusted mine off and took it out for the first couple drives yesterday after a lot of rain last week.

Now I see we are getting more snow(salt) on Thursday. :(

drbdr 03-31-2015 01:32 PM

Still in storage. Local forecast calls for showers over the next few days. Giddy up!

Oh Haha 03-31-2015 02:31 PM

Welcome to Pelican Ben!SmileWavy

The roads are pretty clean here in Mid-Michigan but the SC is still up on stands. I still have a couple small things I want to get done as well as the annual oil change. I'll probably finish it up this weekend.

drbdr 03-31-2015 03:13 PM

Wayne: Thank you for the welcome! I see that we don't live too far from each other. And yes, the dry roads and shining sun make it so tempting to go for a cruise right now. My car is currently in a warehouse behind Schulers bookstore in GR, waiting for new tires before my first proper drive. So geeked to learn more about my "new" car. I may call on you for advice. This place is awesome!

Storage Man 03-31-2015 03:45 PM

Well this is an itch I can't scratch yet.
Here in the northeast its been snowing every other night with the temps falling into the 20's at night. Salt is going down on the roads seems like every morning. So at this rate I won't have Elenorne on the road until May.....

You guys in Nebraska with your 80° days send them this way please....

Brian 162 03-31-2015 05:21 PM

We've had some rain in the past week, and all the snow is gone. Put a new battery in today and the car started right up. It burned a bit of oil due to sitting all winter so I took it for a spirited drive. All is good.

jlex 04-01-2015 03:45 AM

Rough winter here in NW PA. Won't take it out for another 3 weeks or so.
BTW: I'm thinking about disconnecting the coil and cranking the engine before I start it to coat the internals with oil as it hasn't been run since November. Does anyone else do that or doesn't it matter?

sixbanger 04-01-2015 03:52 AM

And I'm in Kansas City but will still wait a little longer.

Oh Haha 04-01-2015 04:17 AM

I'm going to do the oil change today and drive it a bit.

jlex--I don't do that but it won't hurt anything to do so. Might even be a good practice to start doing it for those that put their cars away for months at a time.

Arne2 04-01-2015 09:06 AM

What is this "storage" thing of which you speak? :D

Living in Western Oregon where we don't salt the roads, I get to drive my car year around. It's a wonderful thing!

jlex 04-01-2015 09:59 AM

Yeah, but the advantage is you feel like you have a new car every Spring. Heck, I can't even remember how to operate the radio when I haven't driven it for six months! ;)

I've got the itch bad......but mine are staying put until the streets are clear.
It's suppose to rain here thursday night. Hopefully the all clear sign will be here this weekend!
