Any Factory plain Jane SC out there?
 

I am in the process of restoring my recently acquired SC. The car was is as plain and boring as only the Germans can make a car. Silver exterior, blank interior, one mirror and cookie 15" wheels. The car is identical to the one in the 911 SC brochure.

Finding an un-molested SC makes me feel guilty when I think about the possible modifications and upgrades I can do the the car. Then again to my opinion is not the best looking SC I have seen.

I was wondering are there any un-modified plain 911 sc out there?

My '78 euro has a passenger mirror and red leather as the only options. I added the 16" Fuchs in place of the original 15" cookie cutters it had on it. Someone added an early Carerra tail repro and I put on a front spoiler.
Not the base model, but close.

Ivanuf, I kinda like it just like that (even that paint and cookie cutters), it has the patina look going for it, lower it just a touch and drive it!

i don't thing adding fuchs is molesting. As long as you are putting on period correct factory parts...shouldn't hurt anything. IMHO, most people kinda expect some upgrades...like head studs, pop off valve and Carrera tensioners. Unless this is a super low mileage collector car...have at it. its fun. jump in, the water is fine :)

My SC was only optioned with leather, sport seats and LSD.

Dare to be different. Leave the cookie-cutters on it, leave it stock (modify only if it is unseen) and drive the wheels off of it. I love it just as it is.

Originality is the new buzzword which can translate into value these days. I personally love aged paint (without the rust, that is). A well worn interior is a nice sign of age, as long as things aren't too far gone.

There's a recent article in Panorama about a well worn 356 that has never been restored. Yours ain't that by any stretch of the imagination, but there are fewer and fewer untouched cars out there.

I would go through it mechanically and make it a safe and reliable driver. I'd leave the visuals alone after that, and enjoy it for what it is. Certainly, there won't be any others out there like yours! That's what makes it special!

Keep it original and keep it real :) Congrats on the acquisition!

Plain Jane? No not really more in the spirit of the original 911s. Mine is minimal for a SC and would be close to what a long hood is with the better mechanicals. We'll see in years to come others will appreciate we were stewards of the cars they want.

What's a decent respray cost these days in the NE?

The only upgrade needed is to lower the car. My SC came with Turbo tail, front spoiler and shark fins. Looks way better without all that. I think it all depends on your definition of decent.....$6-10k depending on how the little things go.
Mass has a regulated rate, much lower than Ct. That CAN help, depending on the shop.

Not with those front wheels.

My intention was to leave it like that and do a restoration of the engine bay. The car was left out for the last 6 years and I also needed to do the entire fuel system. The engine was in good condition and the usual upgrades were in place (head studs, pop-up valve, hydraulic chain tensioner, etc..)

I took the engine out, the gas tank, and there were some rust spots that need to be repaired so I keep on removing stuff, one thing left to another and this is where I am today:

Now my dilema is: After all this work should I go back the silver jetta look for the sake or originality and resale value or should I just build my dream SC?

Not really a dilemma at all. Just build your dream car with "reversible" mods.

For instance::: Why not wrap you car instead of repainting it to a non original color?

ivanuf, what is wrong with the "silver jetta look"? I drove my 86 Silver Jetta Diesel Coupe for 487,000 miles and it looked the same as the day I got it. Always looked clean.

The silver looks good when offset with satin black so if you respray it the same color just keep all the rubber bits and black wheel areas nice and it would look sweet.

The cost of a respray makes it a tough choice but if your in it for the long haul spray it something you really like and after enough miles a second respray would be due.

If your a short timer well original color is more cost effective and looks less modded.

Blue wing, the color I am considering is your Minerva Blue or Light Blue Metallic. Now given the option will you paint your Minerva silver? I am doing the disassembly/assembly myself. I also did the paint strip and primer. The change of color is not really any additional cost on my case.
Also I rent part of my business to a body shop, so a respray cost for me is minimal.

ivanuf, you got me. No I wouldn't do a color change to Silver, I chose silver on the Jetta due to the intended use. A 911 is a different story as far as a collector car aspect.
But if you have the available resources at reasonable cost I would change it to what YOUR 911 should look like. You have to look at it and enjoy it, make it what you want it to be.

Looks like you have things well under control, no fear so color is just another line item for you.
