915 shifting problem
A few weeks ago I replaced the transmission mounts, motor mounts and shift Coupler in my 1983 sc, using a new WEVO coupler. Had a tough time adjusting the new coupler, in that id nick 4th gear on down shifts from 5 th gear. Once I got it adjusted just right it shifted well and went from 5th to 4th real smooth.
Flash forward to yesterday, it was a balmy 77 degrees here in Denver so a took a 140 mile road trip. About half way into my highway cruise in 5th gear for about 30 minutes, I went to downshift but the shifter was stuck in 5th gear. I ended up pushing hard to the right and eventually got it to downshift. On the way home same thing happened but not on every downshift--some times downshift was smooth and easy but when it would stick the only way to get it out was a hard push to the right. Transmission fluid is new last year with Swepco 201 and transmission shifts ok normally, with the typical sometimes difficulty getting into 2nd that many of you have. Any thoughts on if my problem is common, is likely a shifter issue, coupler adjustment issue, etc. Thanks, Tim |
Did you tighten the cone screw on the coupler? Sounds like it's a bit too tight against the 5th/R lockout tang on the shifter housing.

It sounds like your "shift fork" may be loose.
This was mine as removed some time ago. Note the broken and loose studs. None of these were secure. This is a very common issue. It's certainly worth checking but you have to drain the oil to remove it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426547048.jpg |
Sounds like it's hanging up on the lock pawl plate. I would go back and check your work again

Guys thanks. Yes I did tighten the set screw on the coupler but I'll take your advice and recheck my coupler adjustment, then pull the fork plate I'm bottom last. I'm guessing it's one of the two issues as you suggest. I'll report back shortly...

That stuff happened to me when I got my new coupler. It just takes several times to adjust it right!!! You will get it!

I had this problem many moons ago. Did not come out of 5th. Adjusting the shift coupler at the tunnel did it.

Well I dug into this today and after more adjustment of my new WEVO coupler I think it's fixed. Thank you all for the great advise. In a few weeks I plan to drain the trans and check the shift fork too but for now it's down shifting properly.
