how chicken soup solved my engine repair headache

The Problem ... like so many others i am in the middle of repairing broken head studs on my SC. I cleaned it as well as i could before pulling the thing apart .. once all apart though and the cylinders slid off and the broken studs removed there is still a lot of grime around the area.

The real problem is how to stop any of that grime falling into the engine while cleaning it .. i have seen guys use rags and cups and all kinds .. but nothing really water proofs it so you can clean with confidence...

Soooo......

I was having my chicken soup for lunch and it dawned on me .. my chicken soup container was strangely enough the same size as the spigot on my 3 litre.. I also just happened to have some inch thick closed cell foam on my table from something i unpacked earlier . I am sure that stuff is available cheap at the craft store..

So i drew a circle on the foam , used a knife to cut it out. I then put a ziploc bag over the rods .. , then i cut a slit in my foam disk to slide over the rod . The foam disk had to be compressed to fit into the spigot which was great ... voila . i now have a water and grime proof spigot hole. I used my cumin spice lid for the oil return tubes and just rough guessed the oil cooler holes .. now i can scrub away ..

took a total of 10 minutes to do all of them ..

just thought i would pass this tip along ..

That is actually a truly great idea!

I'll be eating some soup here pretty soon it seems. :)

Pretty cool idea. Combine with a cup over the top and your rod end would stay clean too. :)

Ah, didn't see the baggie. Clever!

Still nothing can keep out a stink bug! I find those little buggers everywhere! But this is at least a good start. :)

Do people normally just stuff rags into the cylinders?

wayner 03-19-2015 08:37 AM

At first glance I thought you filled your crank case with soapy water to clean it out!
