Looking at a 1980 911SC which has a Vin # that seems a bit fishy. Where are the other locations to look for the Vin # other than the windshield post and metal plate inside the door jamb on the driver's side.
Thanks guys ------------------ jrdavid68 1986 Carrera (166K Miles) 1980 911SC (176K Miles) 2001 VW Passat (< 5000 Miles) 1972 Chevy C10 (40,300 Miles) |

In older cars, there used to be a number placed under the dash padding...the lower edge of the dash...but I suppose a prospective seller might object if you wanted to look there?

I have an '81SC and have found the VIN etched in both of the side windows, beside the safety glass etching.
On yellow striped labels on the inside of the hood and trunk lid. The yellow striping states "DO NOT REMOVE", and I haven't so I don't know if it is stamped in the steel or not, but I doubt it. The easiest one for you to compare would be the one under the trunk carpet right between the hinges of the smuggler's box. Those are the ones I know of on mine, and like pwd72s stated I have seen that stamping on a 82 car in a bone yard, behind the padding just below where the radio is, but I haven't seen that one on mine. Pull the trunk carpet is the easiest. |

John..maybe we should be quiet? After all, this info should only be available to Police, car thieves, and car counterfeiters...all of whom I am sure already know.

Thanks guys. I am taking the car to a mechanic in the morning to check it out and see what his documentation can come up with.
Thanks again! |

Thanks again. I found a match for the correct VIN stamped on the chassis by the "smuggler's box", spoke to a dealer, and talked to Porsche Cars North America. All very helpful, in fact, the girl at PCNA described the car to a "T" once she had the VIN number.
As always, thanks again! |
