1972 911E 5th gear whine

Hi

I got a 1972 911E. Suppose to have a rebuilt transmission with about 36,000 according to the paperwork i got when i baught the car. Shifts into all gears fine and is quiet except for 5th gear has a constant whine. Anyone know what this is, how long it will last before breaking completly, estimated repair $$$$? Let me know.

Thanks
James

James,

Can't help you with your question, but I am sure that someone will recommend that you change the transmission oil and put in some Swepco.

Have you checked the oil level in the transmission? Perhaps it's a little low. In any case, an oil change can't hurt.

Likely cause is running with the transmission oil low; 5th gear is higher than the rest and the first to be damaged when oil is low. You could try properly filling the tranmission with Swepco but the damage is likely already done. In addition to cost of R & R of engine and transmission I suspect you're looking at around $500 to $1000 depending upon what needs to be replaced in the fifth gear set and related bearings. Jim

If it's any help, my 72 has had a low pitch whine in 5th for many years now. The whine has never developed into any other kind of gearbox problem. I have grown accustomed to the sound and just ignore it. I also change my transaxle fluid every 2 years. Changing the fluid has not affected the sound.

If memory serves me correctly, when Road and Track tested a 1972 911E back in 1972, they also complained about whine in 5th gear. If everything else is okay with the gearbox, I wouldn't loose any sleep over the noise.

Good luck.

The whine is annoying. I guess you could say it is low pitched but sometimes loud especially when shifting into 5th at a lower speed(45) but the previous owner removed the sound proofing under the rear seats and the inside of the engine compartment when he attempted to restore the interior with new carpet. Maybe some new sound proofing in that area would deaden the noise some?? Thanks James
