fuel line question

to make a long story short, ive been chasing this problem for about a year now. the car is a 1973 911 e targa. ive did a full restoration on the car. I did a top end rebuild. it doesn't stay idling and pops through the intake. my mechanic keeps telling me its cam timing. I dropped the motor out again. checked the cam timing and everything seems right on target. I also sent my mfi injection pump out to fairchilds and he checked and set it up for me. I checked my fuel lines from the pump itself, turns out I had the R and the D lines reversed. I assume r=return and D = deliver. would this be the root of my problem?? would the car actually run with those lines crossed? I know theres a few different pics of the fuel line diagrams. I think I have the right one.

I know zero about MFI but Grady Clay posted much on this topic. Find his posts here and I would think you will find what you need.

Probably whatever those two letters connote are German words, not English. I'd guess D is for Druck, or pressure. Not sure about R.
Also, I'd have to think that having those two lines crossed would have significant negative side affects. The MFI pump works like a fuel distributor with individually timed pulses for each cylinder...running the fuel thru it backwards cannot be conducive to a good running engine. Apart from the idle popping does it run okay? The fuel lines are easy, run them per correct diagram and cross it off your list. Its no small task to drop the engine etc but the problem with checking the cam timing yourself is that if you did make some error originally then you may not spot it when you recheck it. (no offence intended, just sometimes we cannot see what we cannot see)

What about ignition timing, ignition leads, cross fire etc?

i have the motor dropped out again. a few things I need to do to the motor. so I decided to check and make sure I had the fuel lines connected right. when I first did the break in of the motor, which I did the top end rebuild. the car ran for almost the 20 minutes of break in like the book says. then the car shut off and wouldn't start again. then swapped 2 of the fuel lines coming out of the fuel pump. then the car started, but ever since then, the car isn't running right. before I dropped the motor back out, the car would start up, but wouldn't hold an idle. if I revved it, it would sound pretty good, with a little backfire through the stacks. but I definetly have the fuel lines crossed.
