Bad transmission/motor mounts?

Hey all,

I posted a question relating to this a while back. My transmission is popping out of 5th gear when decelerating. It happens when transmission is nice and warm and I'm slowing from say 85-60 and using the engine as the brake. at around 65 the shifter will slowly move backwards and the POP, out it comes.

I'm doing a bit of research on it. Any thoughts that this could be the engine and tranny mounts? Engine shifts well and sounds good. I had someone suggest synchros.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jason

It COULD be the mounts but first some questions:

Have you adjusted the shift coupler?
Are the shifter and it's bushings in good shape? Have you inspected them?
Have you adjusted the clutch cable?
Is it ONLY 5th gear?

Slop in the bushings can cause similar symptoms. There is a tang on the top of the shifter housing that engages a tang on the shifter. That is the mechanical link to keep the shifter in 5th. If it is out of alignment it may be engaging it completely. Synchros should typically make it difficult to engage the gear at all so, at this time, I wouldn't concern yourself with those.

If you havnt already replace your shift coupler bushings, support bushing and ball cup bushing. Then adjust shift coupler per manual instructions. These are cheap easy fixes a good place to start.

Would like to know the number of 5th gear synchros manufactured vs. 1st and 2nd gear. 50 to one?

Bob-I had to replace my 5th a few years ago. The gear actually broke. I couldn't engage the gear at all.

EDIT--this is just for conversation, not a diagnosis for the OP.
