Angry Steering Wheel Shimmy!!!!!

Help!!!! My 911 steering wheel has started to shimmy! I checked the front tires and they look fine. The car is not pulling. Any ideas? Can this be the original Bilstiens are shot?(135,000) or could it be a rusted caliper like in my old Beemer? Ball joints maybe? Help!!!

i think a good place to start would be to have your front wheels balanced. and go from there

Just to second slackjaw - I had some of the weights fall off my right front wheel (stock Fuchs). Had the SERIOUS shimmy, really scary at 50 - 55 on a rough road surface.

The tire shop pulled them off and balanced them again - 15 minutes and good as new, no charge. You could see where the weights "used to be" stuck onto the rims.

Hope you are as lucky - but definitely start here first. ... it could be simple!

Yep, check for missing wheel weights first. Also, have you had the wheels off recently? If you have, and didn't put them on the hub exactly as they were before (red stud alignment/orientation), it can have the same effect.

Eric, what is the "red stud/alignment" deal. I'm not familiar with this and I just had my front wheels off. Thanks.

I'm curious about the red stud alignment myself. I have heard about it but cannot for the life of me find a red stud anywhere on my car. Anyone have insight?

A lot of info in the archives. Here are a few "red stud" posts I found:

Red stud? Never heard of that. I have Fuchs but they have not been off the car since the shimmy started. I looked for weights but none are visible from the outside. Are the weights on the inside? I'm gonna have front and rear wheels balanced today after work. Lets see what happens.

I understand that there is supposed to be a red stud. My car has none. I guess the paint wore off or the studs were replaced. My question is actually "How do I figure out which stud is supposed to be red?"

Some more food for thought....I had a nagging shimmy on my 87....wheels were balanced then rebalanced many times at different shops. Eventually I put on new front rotors which helped a little.....the cure were new struts. No more shimmy.

Angry

Ok just had all 4 wheels balanced.....Nope still shimmies! Not quite as bad mind you , but it still does it. So my next probable candidate is...Brake caliper stuck or dragging? I need new struts? Ball joints? This is getting old!

Does the shimmy get worse when you brake? Apply the brake gradually, if the shimmy increases it’s probably a rotor. If not...

Hmmm now that I think about it YES! It gets far worse when I brake....So maybe its Rotor time. Question is how do I know which rotor is bad?

The quick check, jack up the front end and spin the tires. The one that goes Shhhh, Shhhh, Shhhh is the warped one. The Shhhh sound is the pads rubbing the rotor, then they stop, then it rubs, you get it.

Don't just replace one rotor in the front, replace as a pair. There way to cheap not to replace both and, easy to do
