How is Rauch & Spiegel Quality?
Ordered a Sachs pilot bearing, got a R & S. Any difference? Thanks.

Rauch & Spiegel is good quality parts. I use their Syncro rings & engaging teeth in 915 trannies all the time. Have not used the pilot bearings, but since Sachs builds things in countries other than Germany, I would most likely prefer Rauch. Sach quality now days is pretty much garbage.

I tell my dealers to steer clear of R&S parts. Inconsistent quality and fit and finish in my experience.
Twice in the last 30 days I have had clients build g50 gearboxes with our gears and they used R&S steel synchros. They both had a crunchy shift on just one gear( different gear in each gearbox). In both instances they tore them down and found 1 of the synchros wasn't sitting far enough down on the cone. Didn't matter which gear they put it on, it always measured too tall. On the 915 and 901 gearboxes I have had dealers tell me the replacement dog teeth were too tight when pressed on to the gear. Requires honing the gear to make it round and true and the right ID. In one instance the gear cracked and broke. Regards Matt Monson Guard Transmission llc Last edited by Matt Monson; 01-15-2013 at 06:41 PM.. |

Matt, Thank you for the tip. I have used them many times without any problems, but not in the G50's, only the 915's. Since I can no longer find the original Goetze syncro rings, this seems to be the only choice.

For what it's worth, the packaging says "Made in USA with USA, German, or Brazilian bearing."

There was a time where I could have lied to you all and told you my Lsds were made in USA. This is because I build them here using Australian parts. Now, legally I am supposed to say assembled in USA from Australian components. The grey area is often at the reseller level. Many resellers will say that R&S and many other companies' parts are US made when in most cases they are US assembled from foreign components. They use it as a way to jump on the pro US manufacturing bias when in fact they aren't manufacturing here at all. |

We are in the process of making our own teeth for the first time because we can no longer get them from Getrag. We will not be making synchros but my guy in Germany tells me they are working with a new factory over there to make teeth and synchros and assures me they will be better than R&S though probably cost a bit more. I would have had them do my teeth but just cannot wait 6 months for them to tool up with race season starting pretty much next month. |

Matt, do you have a recommendation for a specific manufacturer of the pilot bearing?

The bearing is still likely to be INA as R&S probably only make the housing.
I would look for a manufacturer's name of the drawn cup. |

I bought R&S 1st and 2nd gear synchros for my 915 rebuild. They were out of spec and had significant gaps of their friction coating missing. I had to send them back and get new OEM ones. I lost about a week of summer driving.
I'm not planning on buying R&S precision parts in the future. Can't Shift Into First ![]()

I speak some German but only just noticed their ironically chosen name: Rauch = Smoke, Spiegel = Mirror. John in CT
