noise on takeoff
I've got a subtle noise/vibration/grind coming from the rear (drivetrain?). It only happens when taking off from a dead stop, getting on it fairly hard, and turning left or right. It also goes away quickly (5-10mph). Doesn't happen when I'm going straight, or if I'm rolling. At first I thought maybe a CV joint was going dry, but I figure that would make noise at higher speeds. Ideas? Sticking caliper? I'm going to crawl under this weekend and see if the CV boots are intact at least...

Sounds like a CV. Same symptoms mine had and I found a torn boot with grease generously coating the wheel well.

In my experience, bad CV joints make more noise on takeoff and less noise once at speed.
Also tend to make noise while turning. |

I'm just going to agree with what Paul and Jim have already said.
I haven’t had a problem (knock on wood) with the CV’s on the P-car yet but on every other car I’ve had this problem on, it started just like that. Once I’d get a little speed, noise is gone. Soon after, it started becoming more of a clicking sound, then more of a knocking sound. Once they start making noise, it’s down hill from there. On any other beater, I would let it go at this point, but w/ the P-car I would want to take care of it soon. If this turns out to be the case, I sure hope you can get it taken care of before the 17th.

Dr. Static, I also suspect CV joints and you can clean/repack them yourself for the cost of four boots and a BIG tube of grease. The boots for my particular year are not, IMHO, reasonably priced but of course Pelican is where I'd go.
![]() It's really pretty easy. And this is how you would find out if the CVs are your problem. when you reinstall them, you'll put them on the opposite side from whence they came. Indubitably.

well, at least I know what part of my holiday budget will likely go for. I'm assuming it is the factory boots and grease (according to records), so I was figuring this would come up sooner rather than later.
