964 style windshield and gasket install
 

The windshield in my '88 needs replacing. I would like to update to the 964 style glass and gasket (I understand they go together). Where my dilemma comes in is should I let a glass shop do the install, or should I do it myself? I'm quite handy, but none of the rest of my family is. Is the 964 windshield any easier to install than the earlier style?
Who's done this and how did it go. Wayne's book is subtly quite strong with its warnings.

I read the stuff in the archives, but wondered if there was any new experience around.

A friend of mine just tried the 964 gasket... he wanted to eliminates the window trim. We were able to install the windshield, but he 964 gasket didnt fill the corners of the opening somehow.
We ended up reinstalling the old gasket until we got a new 911 gasket

I put a 993 windshield with the trimless gasket on my SC. My advise is that if the window is used, it will be much more brittle and suseptible to cracking so you don't want to push to much on it.

That said, the installation is simple if you take your time and center the window in the frame. I had no problems getting the corners to seal correctly, but othes have had problems. The newer model is simply only because you don't have to mess with the trim. Aside from that the installation is exactly the same.

TimT, the reason you had the problems that you did is because you have to also use the 964 windshield because it is a little bit larger than the old windshield due to the lack of the metal trim.

Timely topic. What does the 964 windshileld cost? If I do use it, what have people been doing with the antenna(which is incorporated in the old windshield, but I believe not in the 964?)? Other than the looks, is there a problem with going trimless? I do intend to have a shop do this since I have heard a few stories about broken glass in the process. Who knows, at least if they break it it might be covered under my insurance policy.

Actually there is an aerodynamic improvement to be seen by going trimless. I understand the new style to be much cleaner aerodynamically.

I found the windshield installed (premium PPG or LOF) for $515, but that doesn't include the new seal which is about $110 from our host.
