Obenauf's Leather Restorer Question
 

After you apply the Obenauf's leather restorer liquid, how long should you leave it on before starting to buff it out?

Just let it sit overnight, then wipe leather clean. No "buffing" needed.

After the first coat, I would check it every couple hours and reapply to any dry spots. The longer you can let it sit the better. I basically kept my seats wet with it for a couple days and it really softened them up. There were certain areas that kept drinking it until the 5th or 6th coat. I followed up with Leatherique pristine clean and then 303 Aerospace protectant.

If your seats are really dry and stiff, the above procedure is very effective!

You can also "lube" it up and cover the surface with that micro thin sandwich wrap stuff to prevent any evaporation. I am getting so old I cannot remember the word for the stuff.

Regarding this conditioner/re-vitalizing procedure - more is more.

I would give a week to soak the snot out of it.

I just went and checked the seats--I had saturated them about 8 hours ago. It was amazing how much of it had already soaked in and was dry. I believe I will repeat this for a few days...may use the cellophane idea, too.

I've applied it on my 76 drivers seat for several months once or twice a week. Now up to over an hr before it soaks in. The directions say do it in temps over 75. Really softened it up. And it smells good too.

Would you expect the same results on newer Porsche seats? My wife's 2009 997 has leather seats but like so many newer cars they seem to be some kind of sealed leather.

You can definitely try and see how it works. I saw an article where a pro detailer used it (well actually Leatherique Oil but same thing) on a Carrera GT - seats and all other leather surfaces. That said, I think I'd be careful using it anywhere other than the seats as I heard that Porsche uses dehydrated leather (not sure of a better term) for the dash, door panels, etc and that it's a no-no to rehydrate them. However, I have yet to find a definitive answer on this and am by no means an expert. If someone knows the answer, please share! I personally used Obenaufs on my 6GT3 seats and it seemed to work just fine but it didn't drink it as much as the seats in my 77. For all other leather in the 6GT3 I clean with Pristine Clean and follow up with 303 Aerospace Protectant. That's the best combo I've found so far as it doesn't leave a shiny residue. And then for quick cleaning / dusting I use Mequiers Quick Interior Detailer and microfiber.

So how much of it have you gone through? I'm just wondering as I went through more than 16 oz when doing my seats and other leather in my 77. I felt like I was going over board but even when I decided to call it quits there were still some areas that would soak it up and become dry.

What is the 303 Aerospace protectant? Should I apply that when I'm finished soaking in the Obenauf's solution?

I would apply Leatherique Pristine Clean after Obenaufs to clean up an residue and other dirt and grime that was floated out of the leather. After that I would follow up with 303 Aerospace. 303 is just a good protectant with high UV protection. I think its big in the Marine industry for boats. I believe some hardware stores carry it as well as West Marine.

I ordered this oil for my seats that are not horrible, but could use a sip. Will this change that Porsche smell in any way or just enhance it?

How does this compare to the Leatherique oil?

You should try the Heavy Duty Paste. It does a better job. It does not evaporate so you use less of it. The little tub is deceiving. I have coated my interior and two pairs of boots twice and still have 1/4 of it left.

Leatherique oil doesn't hold a candle to Obenaufs! I started this Obenhaufs thread back in 2014 after having disappointing results with Leatherique and having great results with Obenhaufs. Many horse folks swear by this stuff for their boots, saddles, and tack and will use nothing else! I guess I caused a lot of Pelicans to give it a try and most were very pleased! Get some!
