clink, clink, clink, CLANK!
82SC. Sounds like something in the exhaust system is giving me a garbled metal on metal resonation noise when cold and during warm-up but then sounds fine. After driving and up to full temp (190-200F) and then shutting it down the exhaust system goes through the cool down clink, clink, clink, clink then a single loud CLANK! sound. Thinking maybe the accordions in the cross over pipe? Anybody have a clue where to look for typical contraction/expansion binds in the system? Not a dilivar head stud issue as that has been resolved with steel studs. Thanks.

What is your exhaust setup? Sounds like stock heat exchangers. Cat and stock muffler?
A couple of ideas... Just spitballing... Metal straps holding the muffler? The heat shield around the cat? Exhaust stud? |
Stock exhaust with the exception of a gutted cat. Leaning towards a M&K Euro Pre-muffler if it would be more quiet than the gutted cat.

I like Tirwin's thinking. Loosen the muffler straps a little to make sure you can.
Drive it like an idiot for a bit and then bring it into garage. Take the weight off the muffler just a smidgeon with a floor jack and loosen the straps again see if noise repeats when cooling. It may be something silly like the shrouds around the header pipes. Just put a wee bit (I am talking tiny bit with a 2 X 4) of floor jack pressure on them after a drive and listen to isolate. |

make sure its not a chain tensioner going south. ive had 2 pressure fed tensioners fail, one just last week.

Could be loose tensioner. I just pulled my engine and pulled the covers - the tensioner on the drivers side was slack by about 1/4".
So that could be what's going on - the chain could be slapping against the engine housing. |
