Is it possible to tell, without a lot of teardown, which studs are installed and whether inserts have been installed in the crankcase walls?
I'm still in the process of figuring out what's been done to my 77 over its lifetime, since I have no records at all. TIA ------------------ Dave '77 911S inari77s@911fanatic.com Rochester, NY |

I think I read somewhere that once you have the covers off (next time you check valve clearances) use a magnet, if the magnet sticks the the head studs the are NOT DILAVAR, they are the metal ones and are the ones that cause problems. Someone else will chime in to verify if this is right.

Someone else could probably answer this better but I was told that rebuilders are now going back to original studs (not divlar)with timeserts.Aparently there was alot of problems with divlar studs if the coating got scratched.Anyway Warren or John W will probably chip in with some clearer amswers.
