Where to look for a 911

I have been reading for a very long time on 911's. I currently been looking but can never seem to find what I am looking for. Where is the best place to look for a 72-73 targa or a 78-83 targa. I have about 14k to spend. I am patient but have run out of places to look. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Adam

In SoCal there are plenty of SC targas around (don't know about other areas). You're budget is such that if you are patient you should be able to find a nice one.

Have you checked the Porsche Market Letter (PML) http://www.pmletter.com/ and Rennlist.com classifieds? Also, local PCA clubs usually have classifieds in your area. You can look up local clubs at: http://www.pca.org/regions/index.html

WOW! You guys are great. This give me a lot more places to look that I have not checked. I live in Atlanta and cant wait to join the ranks. I have always wanted to own a 911 since I was a little kid. Seeing that the lease is up on one of our cars my wife has given me the thumbs up. Time to put my Pcar savings to work once I can find the right one.

Adam,

If you don't mind coming up to NC to get your car, check out the classifieds for the Carolinas Region PCA. The last car on the page looked nice when I checked it out earlier this year and it's within your budget

You might also check out the Peachstate Region's site. I took a quick look and didn't see any cars there that fit what you are looking for, though.

I bought mine in Raleigh NC and drove it back to St. Louis. The entire episode was a great adventure.

I found the listing in Hemmings.com via http://www.enthusiastcars.com.

There is also a lot to see on www.collectorcartraderonline.com

If you buy long distance plan to spend a lot of time talking to the owner on the phone; also check on this board to see if someone local can look at the vehicle. I was amazed by the generosity of board members when I asked for local opinions.

I live in Boston and bought mine on Long Island. A good Pre-Purchase Inspection made sure that the mechanical "surprises" were minimal.
I would not limit yourself to looking locally. Driving a few hours to look at a car is worth it.
Those sites that NoStatic listed are the same that I looked through and found my SC on.

Good luck.... Let's see some pics when you get one!

When I was looking for mine I went to the local library or Barnes and Noble and looked at the nearest major city's newspapers and made phone calls to inquire about the cars. Make a checklist and start dialing and asking questions. When you find one worth checking out, hop on a plane, buy it (after a ppi of course) and drive your new baby home!

I bought out of state. I live in Northern California and alot of the cars in this area are higher mileage cars because of the great weather and roads. I was looking for a low mileage car and found one in Texas on the Rennlist classifieds.

If you find an out of state car and you need a PPI done there, ask this board for recommendations for a good shop in the car's area--that's how I found Jones Autowerks in San Antonio. They were great and I bought the car unseen with their recommendation.

It cost me $1200 to ship the car in a covered truck the 1900 miles from Texas. If I had gone with an uncovered truck, it would have been around $600-$800 depending on the carrier. I used a covered truck because between adding mileage to the car, road damage, time spent, and one way airfare to Texas I figured it was worth it for a low mileage near perfect car to arrive in the condition it left Texas in.

Be careful with the cheaper uncovered carriers. Be sure to find out EXACTLY how long its going to take to get the car to you once they pick it up. I've heard stories of "warehousing" the car that resulted in parts being swapped from your car. "Warehousing" means that they drop your car at their warehouse for a day or two and then another truck going your way picks it up. Light fingered warehouse workers get busy with your car and stuff gets swapped or stolen.

Bottom line--find a good shop to do the PPI and they'll make your life a whole lot easier.

Also--when it comes time to hand over the cash for the car, ask the PPI shop to act as the intermediary and hold the cash for you. You send them the cashiers check, the owner drops the car off at the shop, and after a quick final inspection they hand over the check to the now previous owner after he signs all the paperwork over to you. The shop sends you the paperwork in the mail and the truck picks up your car at the shop and you're done. Worked great for me.

Happy hunting.

What about Ebay? I sold an Acura on EBay, and my brother in law bought his 1980 SC Targa on EBay. He loves it. We are in SE PA, the car is from Chicago. Alot of junk on EBay? YUP! Some nice stuff too. If I were to sell my 911 (no chance) or my Boxster (maybe get a Beck Spyder?) I would us EBay as one resource.

ask around to friends and family... this may not be your style but I got mine by just asking... My uncle had one sitting under a tarp for a year and a half. I'm still workin' on it but at the price it's a steal.

My uncle had a 82sc but was sold years ago. It would be nice to be able to see the classifieds of the Atlanta area of PCA but I am not a member yet.

Are you stuck on a targa?
I might know of a 83SC coupe in Florida.
