Cool 50 dollar paint job

In a previous thread it was discussed using "Rustoleum", or in Canada "Tremclad".

Respray?

As promised here are some testbed results.

Only one fender is done, the rest of the car still looks like crap.

It wet sanded down to 2000 grit and hand polished. Not bad, I would like to get a bit more depth and "wet look" but overall I am pleased.

Here are pics;

You've done 99% of the labor, why not just finish it with an automotive paint?

A catalyzed automotive paint is going to look better, and is going to be many, many, many times more durable.

Even if you just used some of the lower priced automotive stuff. True, instead of a $50 job, you may have a $350 job, but for all that labor involved, $300 extra in proper material seems like money well spent.

Or even do all the body work, disassembly, masking and sanding and take it to Earl Schieb for a $199 spray, then colorsand and polish the heck out of it.

Just IMO. I don't get it.

looks good, I have a spare hood here I am going to screw around with this technique just for giggles. How much did you thin the paint out with mineral spirits?? Ratio?

Cheers

You guys are wasting your time.. this is not an experiment; its just well, a waste of time. That stuff is going to fly off the car when a mosquito sized insect hits it.. just go buy some cheap auto paint.. if you really want a cheap job goto the automotive paint store and ask for a gallon of "whatever"... this is the stuff someone ordered and was the wrong color..

Also; check around you can usually rent a spray booth locally for pretty cheap...

Its a bummer looking at your hard work preparing the surface and seeing you use the equivalent of water paint on it.

Stop this nonsense.. we don't need to know your results.. we already know what the result will be!

Yo JP,
It's my time if I want to waste it it is my business. All I know is a had a *****y fender that looks presentable and it took me all of 2 hours.

You dont like it go play with your own car, or just write some checks.

Me I like to experiment.

Yo RFR, have fun with that "experiment".. kinda like putting a gun to your head though isn't it? I mean; if your aim is decent you know the outcome.. you do know what the outcome would be right? I'm not sure based on this thread..

Seriously, have fun with that.. should be good for at least a 15 miles..

JP you apparently don't know much about Rustoleum. It is actually a very durable paint and is made to withstand the elements. RFR has some mad DIY paint skills! Years ago when I lived in Germany I painted an entire Triumph Spitfire, outside, using nothing but cans of Rustoleum spray paint. You can make anything shine if you have enough wet/dry sandpaper, polishing compound and some strong arms. The real downside to using spray cans is you only get about half the paint on the object you are painting. The rest is lost to the air.

RFR, that's the nicest fish I've ever seen using that method. I've seen lost of Tremclad/rustoleum thread on other forums, but have never seen it in black, finished THAT nicely. Great job!

FWIW, I painted my neighbor's 72 VW westfalia using this method 5 years ago. It has held up really well, and if you saw it you'd be shocked it was done with Tremclad.

The beauty of it is when you need a touch-up. Go get a can (no paint codes) and either spray or brush on, then wet sand & buff.

No, it may not be the highest quality finish available, but I think you'd be amazed at how great it can look.

Certainly a consideration if option #2 is no paint job at all. Plus, you have the pleasure of starting threads like this and getting people all wound up

Living in LA there are a lot of auto restoration Business operations.

Years ago,When I had Mustangs, a well known LA Mustang restoration place did an entire fender on one of thier cars in Red rattlecan Rustoleum.

The Owners GF (now ex) thought it would be cute to keywax his fender.

they sprayed it and buffed it out and you couldn't tell it apart from the rest of the car.

And yes, rustolem is durable stuff. it is formulated to last for years in all kind of weather conditions.

FYI, this paint has been on my fender for about 4 months, no mosquito damage yet. ;-)

Oh yea, I love it!

FWIW, 7 years ago I painted my Willys jeep with rustoleum satin black and it has held up just fine. The only touch up I have done was on the left front fender, and only 'cuz I hit a rock (boulder) on the Rubicon!

So I say if you have the time and want to put in the effort, go for it!

Not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouths. In my poor high school/college days, I painted more than one motorcycle with rattle cans. Back when it was in fashion, I even did a "lace" insert in a gas tank. I often used lacquer, sanding between coats. You'd be surprised how good it would look. The only drawback was, after a period of time, it would lift and discolor in the area of the fuel tank opening from fuel being spilled.

RFR - Keep going and post the results...

Pretty amazing.....what did you prime with? Seems like that would play a big factor regarding the paint peeling off.

Roman:

Did you spray or roll it on? A few details as to exactly how you prepped and painted would be much appreciated. Thanks!

By the way, tinkering is great in my book. It's usually the road to cool new ideas. Keep it up!

Eric,
I started with the roller method, and ended up saying the hell with it and got some cans. I did NOT prime at all.

The history on the Car paintwise was this;

Original Black car>>someone decided to repaint the car creme over the black>>Then it got repainted black over the creme and clearcoated.

I stripped the detriorated black/clearcoat, and sanded down the creme till I was back to the original factory black.
Then I just sprayed the new black over the old black.

It seems to be holding up just fine.

Maybe it will not stand the test of time, but on the other hand I have seen MANY clear coat paint jobs (even factory) look like crap in a few years.
If it lasts long enough to be able to save up for a bare metal respray I will be happy.

FWIW, on the Westfalia I painted 5 years ago, I painted directly over bare metal. Everything I had read said to do it that way. Tremclad/Rustoleaum is designed to be painted on w/o primer. After 5 years it has not peeled, and that included 2 years wintered outside in the snow.

RFR, did you paint over bare metal, or over existing paint?

Here is another "cheap" rattle can spray job.

Nitrocellulose lacquer in a can, my compressor broke down right after I finished the airbrush sunburst.

Wow, gorgeous guitar! My son plays a dark red Gibson GS and it is quite a nice unit. I plan to buy him a Les Paul in sunburst when I'm done spending on my 911...
