HELP 79 Targa Rear Glass Removal in MD
My Painter has had 2 window installers refuse to remove the rear targa glass. I need someone that has done it before. I would like to have the glass removed without destroying the seal. And once the body work is all complete I would require assistance with the installation of the rear Glass. Let me know how much it would cost me for your assistance.
Thanks Dennis |

The Targa rear glass is one of the most difficult tasks to do on any 911. That is why you are hitting the wall with it. I wish you luck finding someone to do it, we are getting to a point where that count is becoming fewer and fewer.

I cannot blame anyone who recoils at this job. Post your location and hopefully a fellow Pelican can guide you through the work.
You will destroy the seal - all is expendable when you are risking breakage on our fine rear glass.

I have done a few. It is easier, almost mandatory, to cut the seal out so as to not bend the chrome inserts. Then install new seat on glass (cutting hole for defroster wires) and then chrome. Next put into car. With two people it takes me about 10 hours. It is scary stringing the glass and watching it bend. It is a pain to put in the defroster wires.
So in short expect to replace rubber. |

You might want to check with Ralph Simmers (410)-526-2500
He might know a guy who knows a guy. |

Just went through this; the seal has to be sacrificed. Make sure whoever removes the glass is also careful with the pre-formed anodized trim that runs around the glass. Also, check the left and right (they're different) aluminum trim pieces that sit under the seal. Mine were rough so I ordered new ones from Porsche and they required a tiny bit of modification to fit. They each have a thin, flexible vinyl strip between them and the painted body, those are like $5 each so don't hesitate to replace them...
For what its worth, paint shop originally quoted one price to remove/replace Targa glass, the surprised me with an additional cost to bring in a glass guy to assist. Good luck! ![]() |

targa
i removed one from a 72.
first,, use a fishing line to slowly remove the chrome strip..lift it slightly slide the line under it and slowly raise it out carefully so you do not bend it.I i cut the seal and used a block of wood and 2 x 4 to help lever the window out. take you time it is doable. you will need someone to help you lift it off of the car.

I also just did mine. Had to cut original seal to get it out. Keeping the new rubber seal on the glass while reinstalling the aluminium trim pieces was the hardest part. You will have to remove the Targa bar cover to reinstall glass. It took about 3 hours to do, but 2+ hours were fiddling with the stupid new gasket and trim. At least two people are needed and best with three.

We just installed one.. I say we, but it was primarily the installer and he got it done in about 7 hrs. And as stated, forget about the old seal, you'll need a new one.. a factory one not some aftermarket bs.
