1980 911 sc oil change

I just purchased a 1980 911 sc about a month ago. It made the 300 mile trip home without incident. This being my first porsche I was alittle concerned about the length of trip home. The car ran beautifully and I was elated. What a awesome car. I am doing some minor maintance now. I now have knuckles to prove I changed the spark plugs. First oil change was last night and thanks to the review of many posts I had no embarrassing oil spills using a 15 quart container.
I do have a question. My copy of Wayne Dempsey's 101 projects arrived today and I noticed that a picture depicts the drain plug located toward the right rear wheel with the admonition to not block the oil pick up tube with the plug. My drain plug is now located toward the rear bumper. My concern is that I may have assembled it incorrectly. Seems to be running fine, good oil pressure, but I certainly would not want to cut the circulation of the engine.

I replaced the solid dome style cap with the cap with drain plug several months back on my 82. It was an aftermarket part and not original equipment. My drain plug now faces the left rear tire. If I recall, I don't think it would fit as shown in Waynes book. Thanks.

thanks for the reply. I dropped the oil sump plate and discovered that I had apparently not aligned the oil pickup tube with the opening in the filter.

after proper alignment, the drain plug now faces the left rear tire like yours and it seems to match the pic in Wayne's book.

drain plug issue

Roger. Be very careful in tinkering and such with your new vehicle. Porsche's are unique in their arrangements of even the most mundane items, i.e. your drain plug. Take it from me, when doing the simplest projects, be prepared with literature, etc. Good luck on your new baby.
