If all of this doesn't work, grab a multimeter and refer to the photo below. It and Bob Kontak we're how I was able to diagnose my dead CDI Box last fall.

yes replace the entire wire all the way to the cdi. throw that old wire away.
youll need a couple spade connectors and a crimp tool, then that new wire plugs directly into the cdi box |
Ok an update: The charred part of the wire was cut away all the way to where the wire turned green again. I ran a test w/ a 9v battery to see if current was passing through the part I just cut off(about 8" worth). 9v did run through both parts of the wire so that was not the problem. I will replace with new wire but the problem is still there. I need to test the output of the distributor. Does anyone know how I can do this? I want to eliminate that before I go further..This is turning into a project..............If anything I hope this post will be helpful to someone in the future..

Theres a magnetic coil in there, test it for ohms.
Not sure what the spec is. Its that, or the grn wire or the cdi |

that information is widely available.

Update: I was running out of patience so I decided to see if the local air-cooled Porsche shop could help me out. Took the dizzy down for them to put in a running can to see if they could get a spark. They did the test and it performed no problem. I asked them if I bring down my CDI if they could test it the same way, they said sure no problem. Well they put it in a car and sure enough it had no spark. So there is the problem. Keep in mind that my CDI made the buzzing sound that it's supposed to. They had 2 old CDIs laying around they tested them and both worked. I offered to buy one and they said that they have proven to be so unreliable over the years that they can't sell them. So they said just take it for free and hopefully your problem is fixed. Popped it into my car and she has never fired up so fast!! I think i will be making the change to an MSD soon!

Why not send your old CDI off to be fixed? Then it will be good as new (better, even, with newer technology key parts inside, per at least one of the rebuilders). And you can put it in your car and know you'll get many more miles out of it. Then you can find some worthy recipient of your free working CDI box.
But thanks for updating - now I don't have to scrabble around on my messy desk to find where I wrote down the ohms I measured in my brand new distributor reluctor coil last winter. I think those coils are apt to last forever, unless you heat the distributor with a torch like I did to loosen the three Allen screws. |
