What to do while the windshield is out?
I plan to change the dash and headliner (I assume that will require the rear glass out as well) and get new seals.
Are there any other items I should take care of - "while I'm there"? Also - any advice on windshield brands? Thanks! |
Clean and treat the corner window channel with a rust inhibitor, or at least some rustoleum paint.
Occording to a good friend of mine that has been in the glass business over 25 yrs, just about all replacement windshields are made in China now, even PPG ones. Don't fret, windshields can be considered a consumable. I got a windshield through my friend for $104. It fit fine. Spend your money on a quality replacement seal. |

Anything your dash needs. Only way to r&r is with glass out.

Thoroughly clean the top of your dash and surrounding area. There are a few places that can only be accessed with the screen out.

Definitely use a Genuine Porsche seal and treat any rust areas.. Then the grey areas.. Do you want to install the glass without the molding or update to a later windshield Do a search for those two.. There are threads on both.. Decisions, decisions.......

I hadn't even considered a windshield update - that's something I'm unlikely to do.
I have a perfect repacement dash - mine is badly warped from sun exposure. I'm assuming that I can reuse the seal inserts? With replacing the headliner I epect to have a week or so apart to deal with any rust issues. Thanks guys. |

Perfect timing for me on this post - I welcome any advice. My 89 car had a lexan windshield installed for club racing. I am bringing it back to street. On my car the windshield is a bit of a mess - in mid 1989 the windshield and seal changed over to the 964 pinch weld. I think the PO may have installed an earlier seal and glass, so the fit may have been an issue.
My question - when installing the windshield, do I need the rubber or plastic gasket type materials that are stuck all around the frame in picture? or was this because the lexan did not fit right? I want to clean all of that off - but if it serves a purpose, ok. I am dealing with the rust spot, but want the proper fit on new glass. It has been a long cold winter here in NH so it was good for Pcar projects. I took my windshield out to replace my dash as well. There was a little surface rust in the channel which I repaired and painted. My old windshield was Sigla glass and in pretty decent shape. But I figured while I was going in why not just put new glass in. Portland glass came to my house and installed a new windshield with green sunscreen. Fit perfect for $267.00 installed. +1 on the oem seal. Kind of wish I would have replaced the chrome trim as mine is showing its age but looks ok just the same. I too ordered new seats and sent all gauges out for refurbish. The only thing I had to get over is that the new windshield had the round mounting tab as the later models have and I had to update the mirror. The existing one was original but the edges of the glass were showing their age. I also ordered new oem defroster vents to go with the new dash. Couldn't be happier with the outcome! I just went through the same project, I suggest changing the windshield pillar leather on both sides. I wish I done it at the same time.
