Porsche tax! Need $2 part Not $75 assy. HELP

The door handle on my 86 coupe has lost the steel pin and spring. Fell out and disappeared during painting. Porsche does not service these parts and says I must buy the whole door handle assy. I didn't even ask the price. Parts Heaven wants $75 for used assy.

Does anyone have a broken, beat up door handle with an intact steel pin and spring they would sell for a lot less than $75

Boy this makes me sound really cheap. Oh well, I am really cheap.

David

David,

Is there some way that you can put a dial calipers on the other pin and send the dimensions to me. I can ask one of the machine shops that I work with and they can cut one for you no charge I'm sure.
The spring? Most good hardware stores have a selection.

You sale reps ignore the following.
Or,if you send the spring dimensions to me I can ask a spring vendor for a sample.

S/H won't be more than the cost of a stamp.

Send me an e-mail thelancials@msn.com

Mike

P.S. I'm cheap too!!

It's just not a Porsche tax. Ford, GM, VW, etc. now operate the same way. Many parts now only come in assemblies. Jim

Thanks for your post.
Sometimes tunnel vision makes common sense fly out the left and right ears. There is a machine shop down the street from my shop. DUH!!! No doubt your advice will work there as well as in Minn so I will try them first. I will just carry the remaining pin in the front door. I appreciate your help. Home Depot probably has a spring that will work. That is where I bought the clevis pins for the door stays.

And I promise never to complain about cheap, stupid people again. Particularly when I am being the cheap, stupid person.
Thanks
David

David-
I have a door handle from a '70 that has a broken stud. My guess is that it has the pin you need. Let me know if I can help.

Ditto

On the assembly stuff. Toyota apparently is doing it also.
Wipers on the Avalon stopped in a pouring rain. Dealer says
$400 for assembly, plus install. Drove to a friend (with head out
the window and rain in the face) found out a clip had slipped off,
replaced with a pair of pliers. Still working after 3 years.

Not only cheap, but OLD and cheap

Personally, I always have problems finding specialty stuff at Home Depot. My local hardware store has a section of fasteners etc (you know the rows and rows of little drawers) that look like a big chunk from the McMaster Carr Catalog. I would go there to try to find the pin and spring. If they have a good selection, you may find waht you need without needing a part machined.

The little steel pin in the middle. The spring, which I don't see in the picture, is shorter than the pin. Both pieces fit in a groove in the second largest black piece. (right angles and the thing you put your fingers on to open the door). This black piece is held in place by the stud you see pictured.

I was going to measure the size of the hole, and thought a simple way would be to slip in different size drill bits until I found the correct size. Then, like an apple hitting the top of my head, it came. If all else fails, a broken drill bit cut or ground to the correct length would serve. And as an added benefit the edges of the bit would keep the hole clean in perpetuity. With that kind of thinking, opportunity awaits me scripting infomercials.

But, since I have the time and the assistance, I would rather have the correct parts.

Thanks for the pics
David

David, email me your address and I will send you the pin. I will look again for the spring, but didn't see it in the bag "o" stuff yesterday.

Dave, I just found the spring too. Amazing what you can see if you put your glasses on.
