The latest issue of Excellence got me thinking about the winter months and how Ethanol-treated gas shows up here in the NorthWest. This is when I change my gas filter. Condensation in the cold, the increase of Ethanol-water mix at the bottom of the tank make me also consider Heet or other water removers.
But I also think that this is often overlooked by owners who attribute bad running to something other than the gas itself. Certainly bad gas is one thing, but not including the water/Ethanol mix in any consideration of a condition that seems to slowly creep up on your car can cost you money you could have saved. Just a rambling. Jw |

We have ethanol in our gas here in Chicago...I have had a really bad problem with my wife's Corvette...see my posting of a few weeks ago "Water in gas". The problem with the Corvette was leakage of water into the tank through the aftermarket self sealing gas cap, i.e. the kind with the spring loaded flap. I don't ever want this to happen to my 911. Not only was it expensive to repair but it took a long time and $$$$ for them to figure out the problem. When I got the Vette back from the dealer it did not run smoothly but the mechanic said that there was still a trace of moisture in the system and it would gradually cure itself. I had my doubts; but, I used a can of Techtron injector cleaner on the next two gas fills and the problem disappeared. I suggest that if anyone is worried about moisture in the fuel system the Techtron seems to work and it also cleans your injectors. I further suggest that anyone using one of those self sealing caps should throw it away immediately.

jw,
"HEET" is just (methyl) alcohol in a fancy bottle. It works absorbing water from the fuel, same as ethanol-based gasoline will. We might as well get used to ethanol in our gasoline, as MTBE is now getting banned in country after country. The answer: Keep the fuel fresh. The ethanol is hygroscopic and will take moisture from the air as it sits around. So keep burning it up! ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website "If it ain't broke...we'll help you fix it 'til it is!" |
