Replacing alternator - Paris Rohn or Bosch?

Hello All:

I am replacing the alternator in my '89 3.2 which is going in my '71 914-6. The engine came with the Paris Rhone 90A unit. According to Bosch, they do not make a new alternator for this engine. Paris Rhone does make new alternators. Am I better off buying a rebuilt Bosch or going with a new Paris Rhone? I do not need to increase the output, 90A is fine for my application. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

the other option is to track down a good local alternator rebuilder and have them rebuild your existing alternator. There have been some bad stories about failures of purchased rebuilt bosh alternators

Hi,

I would not buy a Bosch rebuilt alternator, my experience with them is poor.

I'd use either a new Paris-Rhone unit or have a local rebuilder do a thorough job of replacing bearings, slip rings, and VR (includes the brushes).

Many have that opinion. Bosch never made an alt for that 911 model. They contract
for the rebuilding of the Paris-Rhone alt though.

So I need to find out the cost of a new Paris Rhone 90A as compared to sending them my working unit and having it fully rebuilt. I want a shop that will actually rebuild it to be like new, not just replace some brushes and clean it up and paint it pretty. I want a total rebuild if I go that route.
Thanks,
Michael
