After shipping costs you usually save VERY little. Plus if you ever have a problem you have no one to lean on. Most reputable stores will match the price.

I will say that with car tires, if you have a really good tire shop willing to mount them when they didn't sell them it can work OK. If you use a place like Discount Tire, your total may not be much different though. Plus the Discount Tire certificate (free balance, rotate, road hazard coverage) can be a good deal if you go through tires and need them balanced and rotated a lot. I've also had two replacements under the road hazard coverage but beware that tire styles change a lot so you may not be able to replace just the damaged tire which means you can still be coming out of pocket.
