Tartan Plaid Seats and Door Panels

At a recent PCA Southeast Michigan Region event was hosted by Bob Budd at his Classic 9 Leather Shop in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. In the past I have used Classic 9 for some leather work that turned out extremely well.

At the Open House we saw an early 930 in Grand Prix White that was undergoing a complete interior make over in Cork leather. The owner decided to add some additional color to the interior by adding a unique Tartan Plaid named Stewart Hunting Weathered for the seat inserts, as well as the door panels. The new interior looks period correct and very stunning.

In talking with Bob he can provide the three different Factory Tartan offerings of Black Watch (green/blue), MacLaughlan (red/blue) and Dress Mackenzie (brown/beige) for the upholstery of seat insets and door panels.

Some other Tartan seats upholstery examples are pictured below.

Very nice. Do you know if he uses the original door pockets or fiberglass?

I was looking for Tartan to do the same thing to my car. Ended up at a Scottish import shop. Every color and pattern you could imagine. Some up to $200 a yard. Most gave a spec for furniture/upholstery use.

As noted above, you are not limited to factory offerings. I did mine in Maclean clan (my wife's family) hunting tartan, because it was a great match to the factory Irish Green.

Who would have thought a German car company would go with Scotish plaids? It sure works, but go figure. Brooke, yours is stunning.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The seats are the ST model from GTS Classics. I had Stefan there make them with the backs in the natural amber fiberglass instead of the normal black. Here are a few more pics. If you look closely you can see the not fully installed switch for the seat heater on the side 😋

To 78-911SC - Your door pocket queston of whether Classic 9 Leather Shop iuses the original door pockets or fiberglass.

They do offer the replacement door poclet bins to the 1974 - 1989 in fiberglass. The new fiberglass pockets are covered in new German carpet with vinyl trim. The inside of the bins are covered in black fabric lining.

These pics are while still finishing up and still not cleaned and ready. unfortunately I then embarked on some more ambitious mods which has taken the car down further so nothing new to show till I'm finished but these are pretty cool to me.
This was put together by a local guy with my materials and his expertise and then my labor of putting everything back together.

I'm a fan as well...something about a '70's sports purpose car that just seems to beg for tartan/plaid. It's classy, racy and like someone already mentioned, it seems to blend the German Porsche heritage with a British racing influence.

The blue/black is from my previous car. (BMW E21's like Quattrorunner's beautiful interior).

I'm in finishing stages of some minor modifications on my '72. One thing I did is change out the driver's seat and then add the yellow/black to the center section of it and the stock, passenger comfort "couch." (as you purists are cringing I'll mention that the original center material of that stock seat had a couple large cigarette burns/holes. It still sports its original remaining black upholstery).

The material is a reproduction of the 914 original yellow tartan, (from Auto Atlanta). One yard was enough to cover both middle sections. I even have enough left over in case I want to trim the dash center strip...??? I'm thinking about this only, haven't decided yet? I'm happy with it so far, sets off the light yellow original color of the car well.

I'm sorry, but I'm still traumatized by tartan. My family tartan is Robertson, a nice "mild" tartan. However, my dad's mom was Wallace, so in tribute he carpeted the entire family room in Wallace tartan. I don't have a picture, but here is the tartan:

Reiver - thanks!

Quattrorunner - what color is your car? First picture looks like it's Gulf blue. In the other pictures it looks more gray.

SD Swede - Can you tell me what tartan was in you old blue and black car? Have any more pics? I'm on the lookout for something to work in my Gulf blue car. I was thinking of going orange, like the Gulf blue Singer, but a nice blue and black combo like that could work well too.

It's gray.
The problem is its sanded in those pics in order to remove some dust nibz.
In sunny day shade it looks blue as a dull sanded finish. When glossy it's gray.
