To paint or not to paint the targa bar??

The 84 Targa goes into the body shop in the morning for some Tre Motorsports bumpers and new paint.

I have been debating on painting the Targa bar the same as the car or painting it a very low gloss black.

Please help me decide.

Thanks,

I have an 84 Targa also. I recently had mine redone in matte black, and it looks great. I've always thought that painting the targa bar to match the car was tacky -- something a ricer would do. Do it in black, you won't be sorry.

Hey Todd,
I would paint it a low semi gloss black. I think the Black will help break up the solid color of the car, it simply looks nice to have the black cross bar. i'd leave the black instead of the color coded look. just my .02 Hope all is well haven't heard from ya in a bit. shoot me a e-mail so we can link up .. maybe this week if work allows ya some free time.

Todd!

Don't do it man! Drop the paint gun and step away slowly!

Seriously, I thought about this at one time and even used this forum to look up some pics. Then I saw 2 Targas with color-matched bars. Seriously made me shudder. It really looks like an ill-planned afterthought. Even cheapens an otherwise fine paint job. Looks like someone let Earl Scheib loose in your garage with a can of spray paint and forgot to mask off the Targa bar.

Just my opinion, but I think the guys at the factory got this one exactly right.

Can't but agree to the above replies - I had mine repainted two years ago, and wouldn't go for anything else than original finish. Colour-matched Targabars are soo 80's...

IMHO...I believe painting is not the option. If you want this done correctly, powder coat the Targa roll bar. In a few years, you'll be very surprised how much better this process will hold up.. BTW, I think it would look great in black, and not color to match..

So, if you MUST paint the targa bar red, then you would need a red targa top as well...

At the risk of revealing the elevated level of "rice" in my bloodstream, here is a pic of my targa with a yellow painted roll bar...

Yeah, and I have aluminum pedals, an aluminum shift knob, and a thumpin' sound system as well...

But what if the car is black? do you go with shiny bodymatch black or flat black? In this case I think the bodymatch shiny black would look nice.

Give the color a try. If you don't like it, you can always go back.
