Question on Shift Boot and Grommet

I have an '87, and the shift boot is looking rather tired, so I've removed it to try and clean it up a bit.

Questions:

1. Mine looks almost comically tall. Like really tall. It is as tall as the shift shaft itself, and it's all bunched up at the bottom where it disappears under the center console. Is the production one supposed to be this tall? I have seen other boots that are way shorter than mine. There isn't nearly as much material all bunched up, so it looks way cleaner:

Mine:

Another fellow '87:

2. I don't have the grommet holding the top, so it's on my parts list (23A in the PET):

How does this thing work? My guess is that I put the grommet onto the shaft, turn the boot inside-out, slide the skinny, top part of it onto the shaft, slide the grommet up and over the boot, and finally fold the boot over the grommet right-side out. Is that correct? Anyone have any tips/pics/guidance/info?

Thanks!

Matt

Correct, You can just use a zip tie, it works just fine, unless you are a concours type then you must order the proper part :-)

Cool, that's what I thought.

How about the overall boot size? Here is a pic from Bentley:

Again, looks way shorter than mine. Guess I can always just fold it inside of itself...

For the stock G50, I think that is proper. My 915 short shifter with Factory Short Shift kit, the leather boot goes up to the knob.
