Finally ran into a Honda2000 who wanted to dance and the straight line race unfolded exactly as I expected.
Once again, these high revving engines like the S2k (the archetype for low torque high HP cars) really have their power interestingly placed. This is why Porsche is the jack of all trades. Off the line, I'm gone, 1.5 or 2 car lengths ahead by the time 1st is pushed into second, and it is only as 2nd gear is topping out that the mood changes. In my driver's side open window, I can hear the impending doom. His engine is totally screaming, and it's gaining. His HP is kicking in. I had the immediate realization of no refuge. Into 3rd, and he'll pass me, but I'm topping out 2nd, so what to do. Now, I don't race much beyind 50 or 55 anyway because if you get too caught up in the race you'll put yourself or someone else in a morgue and I'm always aware of that, so I broke it off and let off the gas in time for him to scream by. It's a mixed bag. If it were a 1/4 mile or a race to 70, 911 loses, but as far as the onlookers go, they only see me smoking him off the line. The is a perfect incarnation of HP versus Torque--versus stangs, you start out mostly even, but the 911 consistently pushes ahead. |
