yellow zinc plating service - SF Bay Area?
I'm looking to get my spring plates replated as well as some other hardware. Can anyone recommend a good place in the Bay Area?

I live in the Atlanta area and went through this recently. I called a bunch of local plating shops and the vast majority were not interested in small jobs.
Chuck Moreland at Elephant Racing now offers this as part of his services. He's in Santa Clara so maybe not very convenient to you but maybe he knows someone closer. If you don't have any luck finding a local place, I just ordered a plating kit from Caswell. I decided to do mine myself. The zinc plating part is not too bad for a DIYer. The yellow chromate is toxic so you need a good respirator. It all depends on cost vs benefit. If you're just doing the spring plates it's probably cheaper to pay someone else.

Hy-tech Plating in San Carlos does it. They also still do real cadmium plating. Yes, even in California...

I get it done locally in Detroit and it's never over the min charge of $50

hey tirwin and others...Titan Metal Finishers in Marietta, GA does zinc chromate. Not sure if he wants to deal with shipping and receiving parts, but wouldn't hurt to ask for you out of town guys. I had my crankshaft pully redone by him. Its a real whole in the wall place and it feels like you stepped into 1940 when you walk in but Larry is a good guy and only charges $40 if you have just a couple items. You can see it in this picture. Btw I am showing off my engine haha...I am just about done with the rebuild and am pretty happy with the way it turned out. Thanks to all of you guys that helped me along the way.

I called Titan and he told me it wasn't worth his time. Said he might do it if I didn't need it any sooner than 3-4 months. Maybe I caught him on a bad day...
By the way, your engine looks great!!! |

Lol! Man I think your right, it must have been a bad day. He did just my crankshaft pully and had it done in less than a week. I know he won't do any prep work. You have to bring him a clean piece of metal. And thanks for the compliment on my engine.

+1 for Hy-tech. Had basically everything off the engine replated during the rebuild. I believe it was like $150-$200 for everything. I'm pretty sure they don't do real cad anymore but I very well could be wrong. My parts were yellow zinc as far as I know.

Thanks for the recommendation guys! Just dropped off all my suspension hardware, springplates, etc at Hy-Tech yesterday, around 200 pieces. They're doing them in gold cad. The offer yellow zinc as well. They said the zinc is a little flashier, but the cad will resist corrosion longer. Very impressive operation, looks like they do a lot of production work, and they had a bunch of parts there from Canepa's shop, so if it's good enough for them, I'm on board. :-) I saw quite a few Porsche parts being worked on. I brought all my stuff in separate labeled ziplocs, and they said they will keep them all separate, but they do charge an extra 60-70 for that service for my particular sized batch. Well worth it to me for this large of an order. They say it will take about 2 weeks. I'll report in when I get the goodies back.

I have been trying my hand at zinc plating. There is as much art as there is science!
Much better when you can pay someone else to do it. ![]() ![]()

Careful Tirwin, the neighbors will turn you in for running a meth lab. ;-)

Just to follow up, Hy-Tech did a great job with all the gold cad plating for my suspension bits. They kept everything separated in the same ziplocs I delivered them in to make reassembly much easier. I paid more for that service, but definitely worth it. Took a week longer than they said, but they did nice work, I'd go back.

Yes, that's where I went, too, and I agree with your comments. They did a great job but was a bit more than expected and took slightly longer.
