Cracking Calipers? Boot install?
 

I am 95% done rebuilding the 4 calipers. However, while applying elbow grease, I was wondering if someone has attempted (or even recommends) to actually split the calipers to clean the inside.

Anyone?

Lastly, I have managed to destroy one of the new seals I bought from Pelican. This is the one with a brass looking ring with 'teeth' for grip (i guess). Other than bending the teeth, is there a trick to installing these boots?

My fingers still hurt from trying to install these boots.

I can only say that splitting the calipers is a one-way ticket to leaking so the general opinion is not to do this.

You will probably be fine with compressed air and a lint-free cloth to clean those areas you can reach. My SC uses a very standard iron brick of a caliper and the seals went on easy as you please. I have heard about folks having trouble getting the seals on but I am sure this must be for a different caliper type.

OK, I guess I'll stop being too clean and confine my cleaning to just the outside of the caliper, the outside of the cylinders, and outside of the pistons.

The suspension is from an 85 car. The fronts were a breeze, but the rears are the ones requiring the brass ring.

If they are the same as my 89, I used the lid off of a baby food jar. Works slick
