Door pocket repair

Hello all. This is my first post here, but I've been reading here a lot, trying to pick up as much knowledge as I can.

I purchased used a pair of front door pockets for my 1969 912. They are in overall good condition, except that the one side on each pocket is bowed out. I have heard that it's possible to re-shape these by wetting, steaming, blowing hot air, etc. on them. I haven't found any details about this procedure. I would appreciate it if those who've had success doing this give me any tips or instructions or a link.

Thanks very much.

Steve

Mine were bowed and I used a hair dryer or commercial grade heat gun to straighten them out. They are made of plastic so heating them does the job. Make sure you don't keep the heat in one area for too long period of time for the plastic will start smoking and burn.

Early door pockets are made of a compressed wood product which readily absorbs water like a sponge and deforms.

I steamed mine over a pot of boiling water and put heavy books on them to remove the bow. This was on a 73. Then keep test fitting until satisfied. Starch is a great idea, the spray type. Use on the inside and out after carefully removing the leather or pleather skin first. Let thoroughly dry before reassembly. If you don't use starch they will bow again just by absorbing the humidity in the air.
