Bursch Install?

Prearrival help needed.
I received a smokin' deal on a Bursch muffler. It has only been used for 8 hours because the gentleman's wife didn't like the sound. It will be here on this week and I would like to install it this weekend.
So what do I need to install this puppy? I have been spraying all of the mounting harward at night with penetrating oil. But they are pretty rusty (21 yrs old). Obviously new gaskets in order.
If I need to torch, what do you recommend?
Should I get new bolts and nuts anyway?
The muffler diameter looks like it will be different. Do I need new straps?
While I'm at it should I do the cat bypass pipe (no smog nazis here)?
Thanks for helping the novice!

Just put a Bursch on my car. Pretty easy install. You won't use the straps from your current muffler...don't need them on the Bursch.

Definately replace the nuts, bolts and washers and you will need new gaskets. If you have one in decent shape, take that with you to match up the size.

You may not have a perfect it but you can coax the header/muffler joint together with a pry bar or large cresent wrench, there is some "give" in the alignment.

When I did my muffler and cat, I called a local weld shop to cut the bolts off $20.00 and no broken nuckles. Don't waste your money on a cat pipe, take it off and brake loose all the junk inside the cat and you will have the same result, better money spend on a Euro-premuffler for better lower rpm performace. The Bursch should have a small plate to mount the muffler to the rear bolts that hold the plate cover for the rear of the motor.

One more pointer...

My Bursch didn't fit well at first (tail pipe was up against the bumper). Then I loosend the 6 bolts at the front end of the Cat (or Cat-bypass in my case) and moved things around to my liking. After retightening everthing, the tailpipe alignment was just right.

I just went down this path, you can get a Mapp Gas/Oxygen torch setup at Home Depot for less than $50. Heat the nuts til they are red, and then get the tools on them as fast as possible. This worked on the 8 bolts I took off. One broke, but it was the easiest one to get to, and I broke it before I got the torch. Penetrating oil didn't help. Get new bolts, and use anti-seize on them.

By the way, are you the one who bought the used muffler on ebay recently for $160? I just bought a brand new one online for about $220.

My bursch fit well, but the flange and their holes being placed close to a bend in the pipe made it difficult to fit hex bolts in place for me.

This was only a problem on the one side of each pipe.

I love the sound! Even better than the OEM style Dansk currently on my car.

I used my trusty makita grinder to take the head off the bolts...then it slid right out.

I guess you could use a dremel also.

Thanks Guys,
It looks like I will be investing in a torch. There is another thread right now about the bypass and it sounds like not a good idea unless a fabspeed/premuffler type.

efhughes3: Sorry that wasn't me. I bought it from a lister on another board for less than half that. It's really the only reason I decided that it was time for a muffler. Although the sound will be worth it.

What about the bolts? Just go to Home Depot and get some galvanized type?
Thanks

I went to a Napa store and got metric. You might as well stay consistent.

Go with metric, stainless steel, and anti-seaze. You can get good SS hardware at a boating store.
