Targa seal install in Austin TX? Dan Petchel-recommended?

Hi team:

Anyone have a good experience to report with a rubber targa bar seal installer in Austin, TX (or nearby?)

Dan just informed me today that it really should be installed by a professional and is difficult to get right.

Would probably get the same person to do my windshield seal.

Please advise, thanks! SmileWavy

You can do it!!!

I did mine myself. It can be done.

There is a Porsche Training Video that shows you how (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYmjT8so5Lo).

There is also a training book that the video supplements titled "Porsche Targa Repair" and "Sealing of 911".

Attention to detail is the key.

I did mine probably 20 years ago. Only suggestion is don't stretch it. Mine separated where it was glued together. That would be at two spots at the top of the windshield and a spot at each side about halfway up the side wing window. Apparently I had trimmed off the excess at the bottom and shouldn't have. Or not trimmed so much.

Jason -
I redid mine when I swapped the targa bar cover on my '86, used 3m adhesive, and while it is functional, I am not super-happy with the results, it isn't quite straight, and like tratza, mine came apart and I had to reglue it together. Still, no leaks. Have you talked to Matt at TPWS?

German engineering at its finest!! What the heck is all that putty about and where do you find it. No wonder these roofs leak😂 love the special tools!

Got my front seal from Dan and asked about the rear Targa seal, he said "any of them out there work". Any suggestions from experience.? Thx

RSTarga 05-18-2015 04:55 PM

yeah, rear seals are not an issue. Just align them to the edge of the top.

Thanks guys, maybe I'll try gluing mine in myself first. The front seal is coming from Dan, I may try doing them both together at the same time. Chasing down some nasty air/water leaks...love this car though!

The problem I had with when doing my rear seal (the one on the targa bar) is the seal has a pressure-fit into the channel on the targa bar. I really had a hard time getting it even all along the channel. Not enough to make a difference with sealing against the top - we're just talking appearance here. If you decide to DIY, I'd be interested in observing...

rehashing an old one here, can anybody suggest a suitable rear targa bar seal.? There are a lot of them out there it seems. Thx in advance

I bought the mid priced OEM seal listed in the Pelican catalog. Seems to be fine.

Just use water spray bottle to test fit. The most important part is to remove any filler from PO. Main thing is clean clean clean. Then when confident it is ready. Lay down some sealant and Start with the corners. Get the seal down as low as possible to insure front lip of top is well seated into the windscreen frame. That will reduce all or most of wind noise.

Caveat, you may need to re-adjust the quarter window and window height, PO may have tampered with it try to fix the gap the old seal created ergo wind noise.

I tried to get Dan to guide me but I figured it out myself. :D
