Wheels for 70E

I have the 5.5x14's which were standard for my car from the factory but would like to upgrade a bit. Was leaning towards 6x15's all around. Without any mods, will 7X15's fit in the rear?

It depends on the tyre size, and your specific car's clearances. Do a search on tire and wheel combinations for early cars or some such, and you will find a lot of dialouge has been done in that vein...

I like 6x16's on the early (stock-bodied) cars. You run 205/55 tires. Factory SC-Carrera front size for many years, so the wheels and good tires are readily available.

The 6x15 'deep' Fuchs are the correct vintage wheel, and should also work fine with 205/60 or 195/65 tires (185/70's are essentially NLA now except for a few CW stashes here and there.)

Hi Chris,

I was looking at Bruce Anderson's book and he shows a recommended wheel/tire combination for your car of 7x15 with 205/60-15's. Of course there's no mention of whether or not rolling your fenders is required. He does say that you need to be careful of the wheel offsets to make sure they'll work. Hopefully someone else on the board will address that.

Regards,

I am wavering on the 15v16" debate. One of the pro's for the 15" wheels is that they seem to be a bit more reasonable to buy. (That and being somewhat more "correct") But, I am not building a concours car, just want more filling out the wheel cutout. I've got a set of 6x15 cookie cutters with Pirelli's I may throw on to see how it looks and rides, but want to go with fuchs for sure. Of course now Ill need to get rid of these wheels, was going to use them for track wheels, but think Ill go steel instead.

Jim-was looking at the same advice from Bruce, but I think I'd need to roll my fenders and am not really interested. If I'm going to go that route I'd be better off going RS flares and getting some REAL wheels back there.

I have a 1970 T and I currently have 205/55/16 on the front and 225/16/16 on the rear, you have to roll the rear fenders and put a little camber on it, but they seem to fit. I am transplanting a 3.2 and 915 so I have yet to drive on these tires.

Hey Chris,

Another consideration is the availability of tires to fit whichever wheels you go with. I've seen some threads covering this in the past; however, you can probably get a good feeling about this by contacting Tire Rack.

Regards,

Wheels and tires for 1970 911E

Chris,
I've got 6" x 15" fuchs on all four corners with Michelin Pilot 205/60/VR15's. Even with new rear shocks, when my 2 kids (ages 13 and 11) are in the rear seats, I experience mild rubbing on the left side. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I have 16's 6's and 7's but the PO put 205 tires all round?
At 1st the tires did rub causing the paint to bubble on the new paint
Now the susp. is set up right nad no rubbing.
I would reccomend 16 6's all round but I may hang on to the 7's as I plan to do Carrera flares on the rear later.

Thanks for the info guys, based on what I'm hearing seems I'll plan on the 15" wheels and stick with 6's. I've got new (2-3 yar) shocks all around so hopefully Ill be able to put good rubber in there as well.

Anyone put 7's and 9's on an early car?

I currently run 15x6s with 205/55 R15 all the way around on my stock bodied '72. This winter, I'll be adding RS flares. I want to move to 16's because of gearing and better track rubber sizes. Does anyone know if I'll be able to squeeze the 16x7 and 16x9 from my '87 930 on the '72? I threw a 16x7 on the front and things looked really tight, even with a 205/50 tire on it. See a picture at:

Thoughts? Mods required for more clearance?
