2.4L 911S vs 2.7L 911RS

well the targa is in the paint shop for 2 months...

so it gives me a lot of time to ponder engine combinations...

I'd love to drive the 2 and compare...anyone have experience?

I have the S MFI setup so making an S engine would be the quickest and cheapest...(find a good 2.4L core to start with)

the 2.7RS is the next easiest, lot of the S parts are similar...

then the 3.0RS is gonna be alot more difficult...need to bore out my stacks, my TB, ports...but sounds like such a lethal combination...and will cost a bundle...probably about 1000 each for the stacks and TB...

for the experts...is the price vs performance difference worth it??

things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmm.....

82SC, I'm no expert - but there was a recent thread, I think last month - where Warren Hall and others talked about this exact upgrade. The consensus was that moving to a RS spec engine from the 2.4/2.7 MFI was really the most cost effective upgrade out there. ESPECIALLY if you already have the S MFI set up. All you need is a 2.4 core, S cams (or the aftermarket equivalent) and Mahle RS P&C.

You could do the same thing with a 2.7 core, preferably a 49 state car, with the S cams and save some money on machining the case for the bigger cylinders.

Wayne's new engine book has all the details and a discussion of pros and cons....

Yep, I've driven both the 2.4S and the 2.7 RS. Is there a difference? Yes, but it's more than engine and the 20 HP difference alone...It's the whole package...

pwd...which do you prefer...

it is gonna be a targa with SC trailing arms and brakes.
I have yellow bilstein fronts, and green HD bilstein rears

I'll search the archives...post the thread if you know it off hand

for the 2.4L --> 2.7 I read in BA's book the valves or the heads had to be angled??? hmmmm...

i guess to be the most cost effective is to get a 2.7L, S MFI, S cams, JE pistons (replace the CIS)...although I'd really like to stick to Mahles...hmmm pondering....

MJ, the engine part is relatively easy. It's the whole package that made the difference between the 2.4S and the 2.7 RS. I believe there are suspension tricks made to the RS, changed mounting points and other things, especially in the rear, that no "S" ever had, and the details of these differences are still open to a lot of debate. Then there is the weight thing...RS lightweighs vs. the later versions. Then another thing that applies to you...they never made an RS Targa. It's the whole package, and the engine is the easy part. That said, when I drove Roger's (he the 2nd owner) '73RS lightweight? (The car that recently sold at auction for 6 figures plus, #1079 the last four digits) Suddenly my 2.4 S felt like a dawg...
This drive was back in the late 1970's...
