Brake light switch adjustment?
Hi gang,
I just noticed that my brake lights don't come on until I press the brake pedal quite a good distance. It appears that they don't come on at all unless I'm braking quite hard. Can someone tell me where the brake light switch is located so that I can adjust it properly? (Santa has yet to deliver my factory service manuals). Cheers, Brian |

I'm not sure about your specific car, but I'm pretty certain they are located on the brake MC. There are 2 on my '87. Cheap, prone to failure, easy to replace.

its behind the brake pedal lever.
Yours must be loose or one of the 2 screws must be broken. Mine had broken off totally and my brake lights were on all the time. |

The switch is in the pedal in early 911s. If you have an '81 930 as your name implies, then you have two switches in the master cylinder. These are prone to failure and are easily replaced. I did it myself last week.
![]() Our host has them here The number is 113-945-515G Be sure to bleed the brakes after replacement. |

Ah ha...!
My bulbs in the tail are fine...they're new and checked out, but my left side rear brake light isn't working, although the tailight in the same bulb works. Could this possibly be my problem in a '74? Can you have one, but not the other working with this problem? I was getting ready to hunt for broken wires in the back...car came back from body shop recently. Guess where the work was...left rear quarter panel. Ryan

Ryan,
The two switches are redundant and are in the same electrical circuit. You probably have a wiring problem... |

Thanks for the help guys. I'll take a look at my M/C this weekend and let you know what I find. Oh yes, the car in question is an '81 930. Now, are the switches adjustable somehow or do they wear over time and need replacing? My brake lights work, they just don't come on until the pedal is pressed down about an inch or so.

The switches are pressure switches. They detect pressure in the brake system and then turn the brake lights on.
Maybe you have air bubbles in the brake circuit and are not getting enough pressure in the circuit until depressing the pedal an inch. Bleeding the brakes will correct this. If this does not work then your switches are beginning to get stuck with debris. Only replacing them will correct your problem. |

Bad brake switches are a common malady. They were the first thing to go on my car. The symptoms are greater pressure needed to get the lights to work. I used to have to lock up the tires to get mine to come on.
Check the archives, there are many posts on this subject.
