steering wheel spline change

I thought the splines were the same up through 73 and then changed in 74. Please school me...

That is correct, unless they used a newer steering column.

I don't think the splines changed per say, but the depth, horn contacts and turn boss did.
They moved the splines forward to compensate for the depth of the crush hub mounted
to the steering wheel for safety reasons. Back in the mid seventies I came upon a crash
where a guy ran into the back of a semi, snow and ice involved, and a steering wheel
buried in his chest is what killed him. I'm putting a later column in my '71 and running a
hub-centric three spoke wheel or a Momo with a crush hub. I have both. The later turn
stalks are easier and cheaper to come by if you are not concerned about originality.
