Wire disconnected - what is it?

I just installed a new alternator, wires, plugs, cap, etc. in my 83 SC last night and noticed when I had everything apart that there was a wire disconnected on the left side of the engine bay up by the fuel pump. It plugs into a small white "object" and I have no idea what it is. I plugged it in but it did not seem to make any difference on how it ran this morning. What is it and should I leave it unplugged? Thanks for any input.

BTW - to all of you that posted recently on the alternator install, thank you, thank you, thank you. I would have been ripping my eyeballs out if it wasn't for the tips in there.
