Ignition Switch or key
Symptoms: Ignition switch is sticky. Sometimes turns easily, sometimes hangs up, wiggle steering wheel and take pressure off lock, turn key over, hold mouth to left, and it turns.
Is there a way to get a "perfect key" done to test if it's the key? Both of the ones I have are kinda worn. Thanks |
Depending on year of the car, a dealer can many times make a brand-new key based on the Vin number. I had a similar problem in my 83 SC. First I cleaned out the inside of the ignition switch with brake cleaner by squirting it deep inside. Then inserted key and turned it back and forth several times. Took key out several times and wiped off black gunk that the brake cleaner removed from inside the switch. I took my old key to a good locksmith who was able to decode the key and make a new master key. There I also bought some graphite switch lubricant and together with a new key I've had very little trouble ever since. I believe that cleaning out the switch made a huge difference.

A brand new, blue-printed key might not solve your problem, given the age of the tumblers and the wear and tear of day-to-day usage on the lock cylinder.
