Anyone got details on a side script sticker package I just bought?

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a history lesson here. I recently bought a Porsche sidescript sticker kit from a member. I didn't do a lot of homework in advance and thought it was for my 1974 Can Am LE 914 because it came with one of these:

Now of course, that's a year too early for belonging to an LE, and I had never seen one before. A little digging taught me that was a sticker that was available for 1973 911s. It was in an original yellow Porsche box along with a side script sticker pair.

Here's where it gets interesting. Most sources will tell you that the original negative image Porsche sidescript was introduced on the 1974 Cam Am LE 914. However, even Bowslby's LE site shows us that the Turbo Carrera got a negative script at the Paris show in Sept of 1973:

In addition to being negative, it's not continuous. It's this slanted seersucker type pattern. I did some searching last night and could only find one picture of this particular sticker 1 place, in a thread here on Pelican. This is the sticker I bought:

Here's the original thread where guys are discussing scripts:

Anyone know the unapplied length of a standard narrow hip sticker versus one that will fit over the flares like on the Paris show car?

So, what I've learned is that the 1972 Can Am sticker is pretty rare. There are repros out there, but the Early S guys seem to think it is like the holy grail of stickers as an original sticker. But what about this sidescript? Anyone know anything about it? It is clearly not very common, but was it something special they offered for a particular reason? Or just an oddball 70's sticker they came up with while they were painting the cars nice flambouyant colors? Any insight is appreciated.

I can copy it you send/lend it to me......do you have the turbo one as well? Been wanting to get that design into my inventory. I can do different colors and modify the length.

Hello,

I only have the one set. I'm trying to identify it. If you could post the length of various versions that would be very helpful as I could measure it.

I make mine overly long to accommodate any side length. Owner installer trims to fit. 84 inches end to end.....the only thing consistent with stock is height, font and length of PORSCHE/CARRERA lettering.

Easier to stock than to cut specific lengths. I'd just like to scan your original if I could. If it is too short for your application, I will make a copy to fit your needs, gratis.

Joe Bob,

I'll consider sending to you, but first I would really like to try to unravel what the story is behind it.

I did some clicking through PET and found stickers that meet this description in the middies (74-74). -75 shows 911.559.319.07 as logo white hatched and -76 shows 911.559.319.06 as logo black hatched. This appears to be the latter.

However, that doesn't explain to me the dating inconsistency. The negative lettering decals listed above (which you can buy through Porsche Classic, BTW) were'nt available before 1974, which is what one would expect. But then why does my kit have the 1973 (dated 1972) Can Am sticker with it?

Joe Bob 05-26-2015 10:11 AM

It was a long time ago.....the PO could have just tossed them in a box and mixed the years of issuance. Who knows?

While I HAVE seen the Turbo sticker, I have never see the PORSCHE one. It resembles a number of IROC designs except for the dot matrix look.

Also being that old, I would assume the adhesive would fail if used to install it on a 911. I have seen at least 10+ NOS scripts of that vintage being not useable.

It depends on how they are stored, heat and whatever......

Sub. Following b/c I might like to put this version on my '74 middie.

Cheers.

Matt, I have an accessories catalog dated 9/75 that shows those. Not that that helps your question about possible connection to the window sticker but it's a datapoint...

Joe Bob, you might be right about it just ending up in the box.

The other thing that occurred to me is the Can-Am schedule versus Porsche's production schedule. Porsche starts making cars and parts for the new model year midsummer. In 1973 Can-Am didn't end their season until almost Nov. That turbo Carrera I posted was on display months before the title had been won.

I'm going to guess this was a 1974MY kit that got the older sticker with the new script. Nothing too special or unique other than it has the seemingly more rare '72 sticker.

John,
Thanks for the scans. I like seeing those old documents. And now we have something that will come up if someone searches in the future.

Well let me know, still interested in adding to my collection. Freebies to you for the courtesy.

Does anyone know where to order this cross-hatched style PORSCHE decal? Any more photos of how the stripes are aligned for all the letters? Thank you!

Joe Bob 08-12-2016 10:29 AM

Since my post of last year. I have made them and delivered them to customers. So you could contact me....

To celebrate the win,
A 73 would have worn a 72 sticker
and a 74 would have worn a 73 sticker would they not?
