Good or Bad to run a higher Octane rated SW chip

What is the general consensus on running a higher rated octane (93) SW chip when using 91 gas?

I purchased a used SW chip that has the 93 octane configuration for my 86 Carrera and I am running 91 octane? I have not installed it yet.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I would not run a chip designed for higher octane than I can get. Detonation is a bad thing and its onset is hard to hear in a 911 motor.

SW chips are great.

But I wouldn't use it either.

Could be a very expensive mistake.

Thanx for you feedback...I guess I will put it up for sale.

If anyone reading this is interested, let me know.

Configs are: 93 Octane, stock muffler for 84-86 Carrera.

He can only reconfigure for original owner only, which I am not.

I am sure he would do it for a small fee. He has excellent customer service.

I did communicate with him and asked how much the fee would be to reconfigure, but as he stated he could only do it for the original buyer.

Nevertheless, time to sell it for this reason.

Maybe there needs to be an exchange board for non-original owners of Steve's chips? My car came to me with a 24-pin 91 octane chip (which is fine for the fuel around here), but is the pre-muffler version, and my car still has a cat and stock muffler. So I expect I'm running a touch rich at higher RPM/load. Wouldn't mind changing to a stock exhaust chip, but it hasn't made it to the top of my list yet since I don't have a stock chip to run while I work it out.

Ghip

I have had two SW chips. The first one I got was for a 3.2 with a back dated
exhaust, SSIs, 964 cans. and set up for 93 oct. If I had it to do again I would not do the 93 Oct. The second chip I am using now is set for 92 oct. It is on a 964 with out a cat and with a cup pipe.

Steve will remap the chip for you based on your car and mods that have been done. I would also suggest that you do a dyano run before you send the chip back cause it will help when he gets the chip.

If you did not buy the chip from Steve he will probably charge you to remap it which is only fair.

The chips have made a big difference in the performance of the car and I could not feel the difference between 92 and 93 oct

Yeah the 93 chip optimizes the timing etc. for the high octane. It minimizes some of the compromises Porsche built into the stock chip for the masses. If you dont have 93 gas its not a good idea because of the possibility of detonation.
