Top 10 Things to Check with the Engine Out
I searched around, but couldn't find a "top 10 things to do while dropping your engine". Would really appreciate some guidance as I will be dropping the engine (at least partially) to replace the fuel lines which are original and leaking.
Is there a good list of other things to do while the engine is out? I know one thing I will do is replace the sound padding, which is still original on my 88 and in super bad shape. beren |
It depends on how well the car has been maintained.
On a 3.2 Carrera? Engine fuel lines for sure. Probably rear rubber brake hoses for safety. Oil pressure switch, thermostat o-ring. I would also change the crankshaft seal and clean and re-lube the T.O. pivot on the tranny, and adjust the valves. Just check and re-torque all of your other fasteners. I would like to also check the door stay bolts too, just little stuff mostly. Maybe the oil cooler seals. |
search 'trinity' or 'triangle of doom'
long and short, there's the thermostat seal and oil pressure switch at the flywheel end of the motor, pretty hard to get at in-situ look at replacing the boots on your axles/cv joints, clean, repack, etc check throttle linkages as the bushings deteriorate, clutch cable....check clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing. check all vacuum lines, powder coat the engine tins, do a valve adjustment. motor mounts? how about the engine sound/heat pad? |

Duh - yeah I have an 88 911 3.2 Targa...sorry about that.

Thanks for the suggestions! Appreciate it.

I also replaced the speed/reference sensors and CHT sensor while the engine was out. Replaced the intake gaskets, spacers, and breather hoses. Replaced cam tensioner oil lines as the rubber portion was "sweating" oil. Removed the oil cooler as it was quite clogged with dust and oil residue from the leaky "triangle of death". Cleaned it up so it could cool more efficiently and replaced seals.
