Post SC Valve Adjustment

How much does the non-porsche garage charge for valve adjustment? Last time I added oil, I could hear a tapping sound, which I could also feel on the #5 air intake. I guess I am due and am planning to tackle the job myself. How long does it take? Being an amatuer wrench, I am guessing at at least six hours. Will driving my car in the meantime result in any damage?

First time will be 4-6 hours. Read the tech article, get the special tool, and some extra blades before you start. Take your time. It takes a while to get the feel.

First time, it is a good idea to go around a second time to make sure the gaps are all right. By the time you get to the 6th cylinder, you will be getting the technique, so you should check your earlier work.

For me it was a battle the first couple times. By the third valve adjustment, I started to get the feel. Be patient.

Local independent here charges $150.00. Your time estimate is about right for valve adjustment and oil change. Good way to get to know your car.

When you get the new P-213 tool ... disassemble and clean it thoroughly with brake degreasing spray cleaner, then reassemble with blue Loctite on the threads ... do it the night before, and let the Loctite 'cure' overnight! More than one'new' tool has come apart ... shedding screw or nut down into the innards of a 911 engine ... it won't cause any damage, but it does bring your adjustment job to a longer-than-planned intermission! And, that kind of stress IS avoidable!

Good "heads up" on the tool Warren. Wish you had told me a year ago. Fortunately mine didn't make it into the engine, but it did take a little while to find the nut.

Same here. Mine fell apart and it took a while to find the little nuts and screws.

Only question is concerning loctite since I had to replace blade at least once during job. Maybe when you get good you don't wreck the blades as much.

First time I did it I couldn't believe what a PITA it was. Feel like I could do my BMW blindfolded after that. But like anything it will be a hell of a lot easier,(and faster), next time. Great way to bond with car, good advice about re-checking your work.
