Renewing Shifter Parts

I am in the process of renewing the plastic parts in my shifter. I have taken it all apart and replaced the push down spring and the plastic parts on either end of the that spring.

Now my question is -- how do I compress the two springs that hold the movable plate under the main shift ball?

Mine are original and still are extremely stiff/strong.

The goal is to compress each one, and then slide the rod through the outside of the housing, the compressed spring, and then out the other side of the housing. All of this then holds the shifter in position within the housing.

Help! And thanks in advance for help!!

Bob

Which year do you have?

On my 915 shifter, I vaguely remember using two small screwdrivers to line things up. Then I got smart and chucked it out for a Wevo shifter.

Sorry for not stating in original post -- my car is a 1971 with a 901 transmission.

Install the pins, that go through the springs, part way. Slip the spring over the end of the pin. A screwdriver of the right size can be used to push the other end of the spring into position. Slide the pin the rest of the way into the housing.

Success! Ultimately feed the spring over the rod about 3/4 inch, then used needle nose pliers to compress the spring and jam it down into position, and finally pushed the rod the rest of the way through the spring. Not easy -- basically its more of a brute force task than finesse.
