What do you do with your car in winter?

I live in Pittsburgh and was wondering what other owners do with their cars during winter, as this one will be my first with the 911.

I drive it when I'm sure there's no salt, and run it every couple of weeks in the garage to get the freon moving for the A/C seals. (I have a hose to hook up to the exhaust to route it outside).

I use another car for basic duty and the commuter train to get to work.

....store it in sister's garage with an accompaniment of mice traps/sticky mats, moth balls etc. This winter however it is spending it's time at the mechanic's for R&R of transmission, seals, etc. (and in this case the R&R does not stand for rest and relaxation).

Actually - you have made me think of a new business. Bring your car to sunny Sarasota on west coast of Florida and for a very reasonable fee (you pay me - not the other way round) I will store it in my garage and drive it for you on a regular basis. As my first customer I will not charge you for gas.

Drive the crap out of it. Though, if it did more than rain all winter, I'd probably garage it for 90% of the winter.

I put snow tires on it, and a 60lb bag of sand in the trunk.

A blankie, a heater and a loving caress from time to time...

Actually, I have to put mine away (Michigan) so I do the major maintenance & any upgrades I have planned. She usually goes up on jacks in Dec & doesn't emerge until mid-March.

Change the oil, fill fuel tank & add Stabil. Make sure she's washed & covered up. If it's possible where you live to drive her on a day when there's no salt on the roads, that's great, but it doesn't often work that way for me.

No Snow
No salt
No reason not to drive it. If it sits, it WILL start to rot on ya.

ciao,

Our winters aren't too bad here in Northern Virginia so I try to take her out from time to time (weather permitting - ie., no snow or salt) just to "exercise" her.

Otherwise she is parked in the garage (being a 3rd car) under cover just waiting for Spring.

BTW, I also agree that winter is the best time to do maintenance for those of us not in Sunny CA becuase it doesn't tend to cost us any driving time.

Last winter - Put it in storage next to our porsche techs shop.

This winter - Storing it in our own garage.

It gets too snowy, icy, & salty for us to chance anything. Last Sunday was our winter "d" day!!

Same thing I do with it for the other 3 seasons, except I put ski clamps on the Yakima.

But that's only to help pull out E-skeeters that break through the ice, right Bill ??

I open the sunroof and go for long drives, but you have to be careful sunburn could be a problem, at night in the garage so not to get oil freeze when it drop's into the 50'S

Happy cool days from sunny Florida.

ARRGH! Our first Sou'wester of the season is blowing through the Willamette Valley of Oregon. That means the ski folks will soon be happy. But George in FLA? I was once in your state. Briefly. Miami. Late May. It was like trying to live in a steambath.
Bring on the Orygun rain!
