Suspension check

I've been reading and contemplating about a front end suspension refresh on my 82.

This weekend I removed the torsion bar covers (front) to see what the bushings look like. Wanted to see if torsion bars were centered, etc.

Rubber did not look cracked or dry. Bar was centric. The play in the wheels (L/R and top/bottom) seems to be similar to what other cars I drive have, ie., little or no play.

Visual checks are limited I know. Any advice on what else I could do to determine how much wear / if the suspension is needing a refresh?

Reason I'm looking into it is car seems a bit harsh in front end over street holes. Shock inserts are new Bilstein HDs, but everything else on this 300k mi car is pretty much an unknown.

How old are your tires? Also are you using rubber in your anti roll bars?

I think RS is wondering on the tire date codes.

But you can never tell simply by looking at rubber. If older than 20 years it is probably not doing its job very well.

You are definitely due for a refresh. The car should not be harsh at all w/ the stock spring rates and fresh inserts. New ball joints, tie rods, and a-arm bushings will make a tremendous difference.

just did the tie rods, ball joints, bump steer kit, and inserts on 81 sc; tremendous difference. Why can't I find the date codes on my tires?
