Coil overs to replace broke torsion tube s

I have a 69t and my torsion tube broke. Can I easily convert to coil overs ? Which ones ? How ? Thanks for any advice.

TEchnically yes but its not a good idea. The transmission mounts to the torsion tube and it is a significant structural member of the car.

Get a new one welded in. The common method is to splice, butt weld and seam the new torsion tube but this will depend on where its rusty.

I would also suspect you have other rust that might be needing attention if the torsion tube is broken.

I fixed the "other" rust, then the tube broke. My son suggests I weld it up , then go coil over, because the torsion bars won't fit right. I think he's right . Is he ?

A friend of mine did just that when his torsion tube broke. Keep in mind that there is a bit of structural work that needs to be done when doing this conversion. You'll need to talk to someone at a race shop. Sprint car builders are your go-to guys for modifications such as these.

Not only the Transmission but also the Trailing Arms mount onto the tube and unless well located will cause serious handling problems.

Also with a 1969 car you would have to fit the shocks upside down and use an adapter for the eye end as the shock tower is very small and a suitable coil spring wouldn't fit if was mounted the correct way up.

Volume 11 of the Workshop Manual shows how to replace the tube.
