loose transmission?

In 3rd gear, at 2800 rpm, constant speed, when I suddenly step on the gas or take my foot off the gas, there is a loose feeling in the transmission. It shakes the whole car.

It does the same thing in other gears (1st, 2nd and 4th). I haven't tried 5th. But I noticed the particulars of 3rd gear today.

I used to think it was the clutch or the connection between the transmission and the motor because it also makes a loud clapping sound. I can drive it fine, but have to be careful not to hit this loose spot on the transmission.

Any ideas on what the particulars might be (new tranny, loose motor mount, loose clutch, etc.)?

Your descriptiion sounds somewhat like my '79 Alfa Romeo Spider........ just before the flywheel came off!

What happened after the flywheel came off? How much damage? What did you do?

was it progressive?

my guess is clutch chatter...worn clutch...

I'd check shifter adj and clutch cable length.

it that doesn't fix it, then it is probably something internal...

flywheel, clutch, TO bearking, TO fork

good luck

I've had the car for about a year now and it's always been this way. It doesn't seem dangerous or chronic so I haven't been considering it until now. Now that I have the other problems fixed, it's time to start looking into this one.

If feels like the transmission isn't completely attached to the engine, but only when you force it to. Like when you are going about 5 mph and put it into 2nd gear and bump the pop the clutch a little harder than usual.

I've checked the shifter linkage on the rear seat floorboard and it looks like new. Tell me about the clutch cable length check, please.

I have a photo somewhere, but suffice to say the damage was substantial. The transmission case and mainshaft etc. were scrap.

RR, I think you may right on. I had the same thing in an '82 SC. My wrench at the time found that the bolt(s) connecting the trans to the engine were loose. I now have had the same thing in my E for a couple of weeks and have been too lazy to get under it and check. Would love to know when you resolve your problem.
